Installing a new speedo cable ?
Reading about why they go bad, and, mine just went bad, but don't see how to install. Years ago some nice guy i know put in a new cable in my 97 for me, and after watching him do it, i thought, "well, that was easy, i can do that". Naturally over the years that knowledge has completely evaporated, and now i haven't a clue. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Think i'll try to E Mail Carl Leo, see if he has a cable ? Haven't "spoken" to him in a while. Hope his address is still voyagerparts@ bellsouth.net ?
So, thanks for any info. Charles L.

The cable is still available from the dealer, about a half hour job. go in from the headlight for the top connection, the bottom only requires a pair of pliers.

Re: Installing a new speedo cable ?
Not hard at all to replace. Replaced mine at the Voyager Rally last year in the parking lot of the motel. Mine went out the second day of the rally and a fellow Voyager (thanks Fred) had a spare in his trunk. Just a pair of pliers will work but one of those of the long nose off-set variety will make it easier in the cramped space up top. Can get the cable from cheapcycleparts.com for under $14 if Carl doesn't have it.

Re: Installing a new speedo cable ?
Here's a tip - to install the inner cable, the one that spins, start at the bottom (before you connect to the wheel) and when it's up there, twist until the cable aligns itself and slips into the socket. The use whatever jack you have to raise the front wheel off the ground (with the bike on the center stand) the stick the cable into the front wheel receptacle and slowly spin the wheel until the cable slips into that socket. Then all you do is attach and tighten the outer cable housing.

Re: Installing a new speedo cable ?
At the wheel, I move the outer cable around and around with the inner cable rolling against the speedo drive. As it does this, the inner cable will turn and eventually line up with the pinion inside the drive unit.

Thanks all. I got it. even the offset long nose pliers. I'll try Carl Leo first, see if he's got one ? Sounds like even a kid could do it. And if i see one coming by the house, i'm gonna grab him. Charlie

Re: Installing a new speedo cable ?
Please, please be sure you grease that cable core before you install it. Use a good quality grease that will stick to the inner cable. If you don't you will be changing it out again soon!

Re: Installing a new speedo cable ?
After reading this thread, I serviced my speedo cable. As said, it was pretty easy. After pulling the inner cable from the housing, I wiped the cable clean and used carb cleaner to remove the old grease, which had hardened, from the housing. I then used compressed air to remove all remaining residue from the cable housing. I applied grease, liberally, to the inner cable and reinstalled. It was fun!
