Flush recommendation

Post by Lumpy Rider »

Hi folks. Need to flush out my Voyager's cooling system. Any recommendations on a product safe for aluminum engines? Prestone's product website states their chelating, non-acidic cleaner is good for all metal types, though it does not specifically identify aluminum. Thanks.

I have used the Prestone rad flush. On my '87 there was some gelatinous crap hanging around the cylinder base at the manifold, brown goop lining some of the pipe bottoms and rusty looking deposits on the top of the rad core. I did the "drive for the 6 hour flush" using deionized water and the flush so it took several days to complete. The drain water was muddy. I refilled with deionized water and drove for another hour or so and drained again to get the remnants out. Just a brownish tint this time. Filled system with deionized water/Prestone coolant mixture and generally remains at 1 small line above the wider first "Normal" line, unless I am in slow traffic then 2-3 small lines.
Temp here is 70-75* max, so it's easy on the cooling system.

Thanks. Prior to my ownership, bike sat and was rarely if ever maintained by original owner. Second owner just rode it sans maintenance. I am third owner. Overflow bottle was dry and crusty, and bike had very little coolant in radiator, which was also crusty. However, there is no oil in the coolant and visa versa.

All modern coolants are safe for aluminum radiators, within the US of A. They don't make the old types anymore, here. Cheers!

Does the XII require non-silicate based anti-freeze?
