Based on my experience, one of two things happened - either the last person to change the oil left it off, or it fell off when you took it out and is laying in the bottom of the oil drain pan! I've found mine in the old oil more than once! And yes, each should have a washer to prevent leaks.

Also note there are TWO drain plugs and they both should have washers. You need to drain the oil from both!

The second drain bolt is toward the front of the engine, right hand side (as you're sitting on the bike.) A little difficult to see from the left side. Also 17mm.

I have three 1986 voyager engines one I know was dealer serviced and low mileage none of them have washers on the drain plugs, and they do not leak.
Does anyone know if since the 86 voyagers were japan built would this be normal. :hmm:

I would say it's not normal as the Service Manual (Written for the '86, the supplement was written for changes-only '87 -' 03) shows the washers.
