The following is Debron's post from the tech tip page. "You can replace the fuel filter from the left side of the bike. Remove the side cover and the aluminum cover below that (4 bolts) to expose the white radiator coolant over-flow bottle. Remove the one bolt holding the coolant bottle. Give a strong tug to pull the bottle out. Hoses are long enough to do this without disconnecting them. The fuel filter is behind the coolant bottle and the fuel hoses are long enough to access and replace the filter. When putting it back together, make sure there are no kinks in the fuel line or the coolant line. I can't remember for sure how I did this, but I think I clamped off the fuel line (tank side) with a small pair of vise grips to keep the gas in the tank from going everywhere." For additional info see my signature chapter 2 near the end of the chapter.

...but I think it's only two bolts, one each for the side cover and chrome cover.

That is how I changed mine but I rode it till it was low on gas,and siphoned out the rest. That way I would have less of a chance of spilling it all over the floor. :cry2:

FYI, pick up a set of large long nose forceps at Harbor Freight. You won't regret it and you will be surprised how often you use them.

Hello from NJ, here is a pic that may aid in your task. I use some vac tube on a pair of vise grips, so as to not scar the fuel line while pinching it off. You also may need some sort of hook tool to remove the rubber strap , holding the filter on its support.

the pic is a big help, my hands are big and it's hard to get in there i tried to pull it out but i'am in fear of pulling the gas line lose or breaking something. looks like there is a lot of slack on the gas line ( in the pic) going to the fuel pump once i do get it out.just what is holding it in place? rubber or clip?? how hard is it to take the gas tank off as to get more room? :tho:

thanks

Unless a previous owner changed something you will find hose clamps on both ends of the filter. Just squeeze the them on the clip side and they will open up enough to pull off the hose. Tip, rotate the hose back and forth before you pull on it.

I think the filter itself is held in a clip and you pry it forward, towards the front of the bike. I think. I changed mine last year with a John Deere filter and the old one just popped out and the new one just popped in as I recall.
