I too have experienced the idle 'wandering' up and down several hundred RPM. I had read in an earlier post this symptom could be caused by a vacuum leak. I just got back from my hot/humid garage having replaced the vacuum lines going between the left and right outboard carbs. The left one was cracked in a couple places right at the carb nipple.
Had to remove the air cleaner box to gain access to the "T" coupling. The weather should cooperate tomorrow so I can make a test ride and see if this has helped correct the problem.
I do have a set of Iridium NGK plugs on order as well. I also did an oil and filter change today so I know that it was done and done correctly by me, the new owner. The front and rear shocks needed air (0 psi) and I also adjusted the dampers down to #2 from their previous #4 setting.
Did a 50 mile run this afternoon after the rains moved East so I'm beginning to learn how this iron pony handles at various speeds and road conditions.
MMO in the oil and Seafoam in the tank - Should take a couple tanks before the carbs get cleared. This rig sat for several months without moving so it needs the cobwebs cleared. Some superslab running is on the docket.
All in all, I'm luvin' it.

Re: Surging?
Depending on the age of the bike and it's maintenance history, it is a good idea to check over the carburetor boots as well. If they are showing signs of cracking, if spraying some ether or WD40 on them while the bike is running causes surges then replace them. Air is getting in where it shouldn't.

Re: Surging?
Thanks for the tip. Mine look to be pretty new, but I'll check to make sure there are om hidden cracks.
