Igniter question

Post by chicagorandy »

I have been reading about the concern over the igniter on my model year Voyager - 1986

I checked mine and it has NO part number on any side - it is a black pastic case with just the word IGNITER and what looks like a Mitsubishi logo?

If mine is the old style is there any source for a good #1248 that is not $500 !?! which is what Partzilla wants. OUCH!@

Everything I see on e-bay is the #1179. Regardless of cost, is it a sound investment, albeit a mighty pricey one? And is what Partzilla is selling actually a 1248?

All advice welcome.

Thanks

Ron Ayers shows one for $395, with a 1248 part number. It's for a 1987. Doesn't show a Voyager in the 1986 listing for some reason.

If there is no # on it you probably have the 1179 Igniter they were stenciled with an ink that rubbed off easy.
The 1248 Igniters were printed with ink that doesn't normally come off.
Keep an eye on Ebay some times they come up for sale for around $100.00 just make sure it's marked 1248.

Good News for me!

I was just now going through the file folder the PO handed me when I bought the bike on Tuesday. He kept a great file, including the original e-bay ad from when he bought the bike.

Clearly stated in the ad along with the usual stuff? "Yes, the igniter has been upgraded." One less worry for the back of my mind while learning a 'new' bike.

Sometimes you get the bear and I can find another use for that group of Benjamins. lol

If I haven't mentioned it, this is a GREAT forum and resource for these bikes. I shall do my best to pay it forward and help out whenever I can. I belong to a similar forum for my '82 GL500I. It's nice to find similarly minded folks willing to keep these older machines where they belong, cruising the highways and byways.

...You stated that "the ad" said "igniter upgrade", but yours shows no part#. I would NOT trust someone selling a bike, telling you what YOU want to hear, and a better SELLING point for them ! If nothing else...... keep a battery tender on your bike, .....trouble with the 1179 happens with a discharged battery. As previously stated by Chevyman, the 1248 is usually clearly there.

I have an '86, and was (in a previous thread) given the same advice about the part number rubbing off. I bought a new igniter for approx $350, and installed it. I took a look at the old igniter after I took it out, and the part number still shows faintly if the light hits it just right. Sure enough, it was an 1179.

I gladly bow to the combined forum wisdom and have placed my order for a new #1248 igniter. Unfortunately Ron Ayers has upped his price to $499 but I found one elsewhere for a 'mere' $420.

Ouch!

The only saving grace - if you can call it that - on this investment was the $1500 purchase price for my '86 with 32K on the clock.

If that other igniter toasted your engine, you'd hate that you didn't do what you are doing. You'll have a great bike!

Igniter woes should apply only to '86 & '87 Voyagers. It's easy enough to check of course. Remove the faux tank and check out the part number on yours - it should end in 1248, not 1179 or wiped off blank.

It has finally arrived!

As soon as I submit this post I'm off to the garage to install this critter. On this one the part number is roll pressed into the plastic, not a label or ink that can easily be rubbed off. I am 100% confident it IS a 1248 and now I'll have one less thing to fret over as I build up some miles on my bike.

I sourced it from 2wheelpros.com

NOT cheap of course, $424.19 delivered, but the bike fired right up, no negatives to report pending a nice long test ride.
