Re: C S R ?
Thanks for the kind offer of storage, but I'm not quite there yet
So I had to go a hour south, and see what a advertised $800. kaw 1000 looked like right ?.........So I jumped in me ol grey dodge and went for a road trip after callin the p.o., he told me that he ,and his buddies have been "rebuilding her" all summer and that I could come and look it over but it dose'nt run !
I found the house,it was easy to find cause there were 2 hd's in the driveway and the garage was close to the street and the door was up, I walked into the garage and said our hellos, and found the bike to have the ,tank, side covers, seat, exhaust, off and the valve cover on ....but no screws in it...tools and parts were laying on the floor making a big circle around the bike...BIG clues are jumpin out at me left and right by this time !
The p.o. told me that the bike previously ran ,but they haven't been able to get it started since his "buddy" did a "complete valve job" on it,(that particular gentleman was not there at the time ,of course
)and that he was sellin it cause he was ,tired of sinking money into this "jap crap"
and needed money for a down payment to get a hd,(I assumed one of the ones out in the driveway ?)... Let me tell ya...... here is a prime candidate before me to do some "price negotiation" !
...............................more later......tony

Re: C S R ?
.I sat down on the milk crate and picked up a 11/16"(no 17mm present) wrench laying on the floor and tried to move the crankshaft, but the engine was froze
....So now it's time to start doing the price dance
.....I thru out the ol
low ball offer of $200.... his reply was that he just bought a new starter for it,for $250.and my offer was too low.So looking, there was a Brand new starter on the bike, By now it was easy to see that they installed the cams incorrectly ,and have now bent the valves, and the engine won't turn over, ...So of course , lets order a new starter motor
We shook hands at $340. and I backed the van up to the garage door. Everyone pitched in ,throwing everything that had to do with "jap crap" into the back of my van ! heck I got boxes of extra parts, and crash bars ,and padded sissy bars. I even took the ol "bad" starter, which later, after I bench tested it is fine.So off I went back to the north with my new project, thinking ,,,can't wait to get back to the shop and get busy !

Re: C S R ?
So I make it back to the shop and unload the new project and put her up on the lift for investigation. Re -check moving the crankshaft back and forth gently and my suspicions are confirmed, and out comes the air tools and the engine is apart in no time. Found to have four bad valves, but I removed them all, and got on the horn to
Z-! enterprises for the parts and a top end gasket set. While I'm waiting for those parts, gasket surfaces are prepped, and decided to do something with the tank.I sanded it and re-painted it,high gloss black of course
and took a side cover(which still looked real good) to the paint store to show them the two part red pin striping, and asked if they had anything close ? $22. later (ouch !) the pin-striping looks on the tank as you see it in the first picture.
The valves were bent by the force of the starter motor spinning the engine, the engine never did start for them, and the "total rebuild" on the head was B.S.
If you call running a wire wheel in the combustion chambers,a valve job, well then I guess they did one heck of a job
The rear tire was shot, the battery was shot, and some hacker had a good go at the various parts of the wiring harness, thus far ...it's been a blast !

Re: C S R ?
Tony, did the pistons survive the collisions with the valves?

Re: C S R ?
.....Yes Loren ,all good with pistons, but you could tell where they made contact.
What I'm guessing, is that they would try the cams in one timing position, then hit the starter, then another, then another, wrenching off the r.h. side of the crank at times, back and forth ?who knows !.....I Know they had the cams in and out many times in their failed effort, cause I had to repair three stripped out cam cap fasteners
While I was waiting for parts ,I put a new rear tire ,tube and rim band on it , along with a good clean-up,and paint of the rear hub area......looks better !
Then pulled the carbs apart and went thru them.......then put a battery in it so I could straighten out the wiring issues.
When the parts came in from Z-1, I reassembled the engine , and addressed the valve shimming issues.....which took some time,I marked on cardboard placement of shim buckets... but did'nt check valve clearances before disassembly,
apparently these guys did'nt own a feeler gauge either
Engine all back together and spinnin over good , w/good compression.time to put some fuel to her and see what happens.....more later.............tony

Re: C S R ?
......So after putting fuel to her the bike started
RAN LIKE $HEET ! !...... She thru out all the undesired symptoms.... no throttle response, stalling, backfiring, weezing ,choking
and when she did decide to backfire ,it sounded like a bomb going off with that un-capped V&H pipe on it ( I like a nice quiet bike
)
So while I was thinking about this and planning the next move ,I remember I had a 77' Kerker header hanging in the shed,in nearly new condition WITH baffle. So I went and dug it up and found a half pack of baffle rap and gave it a fresh rap to quiet it down, I sanded it down and gave it a couple of coats of flat black 2000 degree paint, while that was hanging up drying, the set of UNI air filters came in that I ordered, ( the stock airbox is M.I.A, of course ) of all the aftermarket intakes I've been around ,I find the UNI brand to work the best.
So the next day I installed all this stuff and tried it again....fired up and ran good
providing the engine with some back pressure against the CV carbs, along with now filtered intake smoothed it out,and after installing a new set of spark plugs I can hardly believe it's the same bike. This pipe had to GO

Now that I have this project to where it will start and run reliably ,I can move on to find mor problems with it

Re: C S R ?
......so the 33 year old CSR is starting and running good now, so I decided to check the output of the charging system. NOT working
.... Hey so what's new. !
I next checked out the reg/rec and stator. The stator turned out to be the culprit.
stators are checked 4 continuity between the 3 out leads, then each outlead individually to ground ,this one showed cont. to ground and needed to be replaced.
luckily for me (sorta) my 85'1100 shaft has the same stator, so....... I went to another building and robbed "peter...to pay paul" I normally hate doing that, but this bike is much closer to being done then the 1100 shaft
I must admit, not much progress has been made this summer on the 85'1100 shaft project cause I can't seem to quit snoopin around on craigslist each night before bed, then gotta go "look
"at another one , I will post a picture of the stator that I pulled out of the csr 1000 cause it's the worst one I've seen, burnt to a crisp, looks like someone put a torch to it
.........more later....tony

Re: C S R ?
In my GS Suzuki days,I got very good at diagnosing [no charge] symptoms.
.I went through one regulator/rectifier on my 450,one stator and one regulator/rectifier on my 850,and three stators and three regulator/rectifiers on my 1100.
.This was over a total of 88000 miles.I got to where I could change the stator on my 1100 in about 15 minutes and about the same for the regulator/rectifier.It would not have taken so long if I would not have hard wired them making me unsolder then resolder the connections
