Sasquatch? The Yeti? The Fuel Filter?

I suspect that ALL three are mythical creatures.

Now I KNOW that this bike has one because my new spare just arrived from Partzilla. But Crikey!, I sure can't even see it or guess where it is hiding.

According to the service manual most of the back end of the cycle must be removed along with the fuel tank and all my patience to gain access to a viewing of said filter?

Really?!?

Shall I presume the good designers at Kawasaki never intended us to change this item out? Or is there some magic trick to swap for a new one, short of dropping the bike off at a dealership and paying a zillion dollars in labor to replace a $17 part?

FWIW, yes I DID try the "Search" function but it disallows 'fuel filter' as being too common a pair of words?

If you remove the chrome cover just behind the left side of the engine, the fuel filter will lie just behind the radiator reservoir bottle. Pull out the bottle. Get yourself a set of long nose forceps, can be gotten at Harbor Freight, and pull it out by the hose. Just make sure you clamp the hose on the tank side and pay attention to the arrow on the filter to the fuel flow. It is twenty minute job at best.

I tried pulling that tank earlier this morning - seems to be hung up on something? I take it the hoses attached to it 'should' be long enough to pull it out?

By "tank," if you mean the white coolant bottle, it can be stubborn. The backside has one of those pointy-bullet contraptions that seats in a rubber grommet. Tug hard!

THANKS - you are 100% correct - that was all that was holding the coolant bottle in pace - one firm tug and out it came. Earlier I was concerned over maybe yanking a fitting loose or breaking sumthin' - lol

The filter replacement only took a couple minutes following the GREAT advice you folks gave. Had I followed the service manual instead I would be one mighty PO'd camper right about now - lol - staring at the swingarm and gas tank on my garage floor.

Here is what was in place:



A nice new clean white plastic filter is now installed. The old one once WAS white, but age has yellowed it severely.

I have found that a lot of service manuals, Voyager manual included, seems to be written by engineers, nothing bad about engineers meant, and not motorcycle riders or mechanics. What I have found best, if have a question I read the manual then ask on for forum how to do something. Sometimes you can find how-tos on youtube.

I have been using a touch of silicon grease on all the tabs that go in those rubber grommets.It lets them be removed a little easier, so as not to break them off.
