Adding satelllite radio to my 2003 Voyager XII

Post by Allan »

I would like to be able to put a SiriusXM satellite radio install. I don't want to sacrifice the handlebar controls or speed/volume control. Has anyone else done this?

I have a Zumo GPS with XM, and use an FM modulator to get the sound to the stock radio.
Works great, just need to find an FM frequency that none of the radio stations use in your area.

I am sure you could do the same with just about any other XM receivers, some of them even have the FM modulators built in.

I've been planning to have Pete Franchi (suzib6sw) do his radio mod on my radio to add the MP3/Aux input to the front of the radio for the sole purpose of being able to use my Sirius/XM radio. That way I could plug Sirius directly into the radio and get the best possible sound and the handlebar controls will still work. ("Best sound" being a relative term!) I have an extra "car kit" for my radio that includes the docking station and antenna. I already have a couple of ideas of how/where to install the antenna and will probably keep the docking station and radio (when I'm using it) in the right-hand "glove" box.

I presently move my Sirius radio back and forth between house and car.

I just need to bite the bullet and pull the radio to send to Pete!

Do you mean to substitute the stock radio with a Satellite radio only?.. Or in addition to the stock radio?..
Or an aftermarket radio with SiriusXM built in?..

The last one is possible with the use of a radio that has sirius AND is weather proof, AND has steering wheel remote control capability.. Im liking the JVC KD-X31 at the moment.. All digital, no mechanical, with Bluetooth.. Yuo would retain the handlebar controls but loose the intercom, auto volume with speed and CB inter connectivity.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

By the sounds of what is available probably going with an add-on to existing radio. I ride in all weather. Water proof is important to my situation, so the GSP maybe my best option. Years ago in Canada the satellite radio stations offered a lifetime subscription to Sirius and I bought one. I need to find a receiver that isn't XM.
I was hoping for a cheaper option, and just didn't want to pay 700 for the hardware.I would miss the features that I would loss if I went to an after market stereo.

Just to add a couple of things Ron...
Yes, the socket on the back or front will work.. Back preferable as its more water resistant..
The newest "Full Monty" cassette out modification now supports MICRO SD card not the full physical BUT it too has a socket on the front panel and as it will be still under the cassette flap, it will be more weather resistant over the socket mounted by the tape flap..

Second point.. In either case, unless the Sirius device is bluetooth, you wont be able to chane channels on the Sirrius using the stock handlebar controls.

You don't have to pull the radio . When I had my voyager 12 I installed sattelite radio ,using a plug and play set up ,using a product put out by Kennedy technology their web site is cellset.com This cost around 100 dollars when I got mine This hooks right up to your Head set wiring . This person is still in business , but only through his web site Also very nice Person. This might not have hooked to the head set I know my gps plug and play did . belive I got both from him.

True. I change channels on the Sirius device anyway and listen to only a few different stations, only two 90% of the time. I rarely change channels during the day or while driving.

Way back when, I remember about reading of a way to wire a stereo jack off the connector for the CB. Has anybody done this? Would it work for the speakers? or just the headsets?

Question is, What exactly is it you are trying to do?

You want to replace the entire stock radio with a Sirrius one and retain handlebar controls?..
you want to add on a Sirrius radio and use the handlebar controls to make it scan ?
