Passenger mounting of bike

Post by bobingeorgia »

Is kickstand properly engaged strong enough to allow the passenger to mount and then the driver.

Trying to figure out an easy and safe way to get my wife on with her broken wing.
God Bless

Kick stand is always good to use in case your foot slips.

We always mount my wife first. The kick stand is down and I have my foor on the stand tab with my left hand on the left grip. I usually help her by supporting her left elbow as she rises. My next job is to connect her intercom cord before mounting myself. I never start the bike before I am mounted and have the bike upright and cerntered under me first. The bike is always in gear as my wife is mounting. On occasion when my wife mounts from the right side I always have the bike centered under me and am supporting it with my legs and hand grips.

It's also a very good idea to leave the bike in 1st gear, to lock it in place. Starting it, after mounting, is very quick. With the bike in 1st gear, clutch out, it will not roll.

Alternatively, we frequently mount with the driver leaning chest against the faux tank, legs spread apart, both hands on the handlebars, front brake locking the bike's front wheel. This immobilizes the bike, giving the driver strong control over the bike's leaning, while allowing the passenger a little more room to mount -- the driver is leaning forward, off the seat. Cheers!

At the one Rally my wife went to the woman's safety meeting and was told the proper way for the passenger to mount the bike is from the right or high side of the bike.

Everything I've been reading says mount from the left. The MSF website just says have the passenger to always mount from the same side.

I think it's because there is less chance of the bike falling over.

I always try to mount from right side. The kickstand may be strong enough, and I too either have bike in gear or front break lever pulled in, but if kickstand fails, or bike moves forward, the bike will fall away from you instead of on you. If my wife mounts before I do it is also from the right side!
