New to me winter project.
Quite an adventure it was. Found an 84 in pretty incredible cosmetic shape, just the normal clear-cote issues and a broken mirror. 82k on it, runs like a champ having rode it from Louisville Ky, to St. Louis. Only issues I can find is that it's not charging (showed up about half way home) and the clutch cable needs lube or replace - it's really sticky. It's a long story involving me taking a train to pick up a 750 Vulcan which I got for $800.00 and rode it from Detroit down to Louisville where I traded it for the Voyager and $200.00 boot cash.
So I actually got the bike for $600.00 but with Train tickets, fuel, motel stays, ect. I'm prolly about a grand in.
My only worry is that the weight of this beast is quite intimidating - even for me, at 6'2 250.
I did feel like I was getting more confidant the more miles I put on it, but I still have a shakey start now and again from a stoplight.
Is it just me, or are these bikes a little tall in first gear?

Wow, sounds almost like my story! Flaky clear coat in small areas, sticky clutch cable, runs great. Mine doesn't have charge issues, though. Just a slipping clutch. Wish I only paid $1000! Got more than that in accumulated new/used spare parts.
Can you post some pics? Like Tony says, we all like to see lots of pics!

If I don't get around to cleaning up the clear-cote this winter, I am considering riding it next season as a bobber, so I can spend time indoors on the paint, and outdoors doing the standard maintainence stuff with out having anything in the way. That's actually what pulled me to the Voyager over the 84 LTD GoldWing - the Voyager to me looks pretty sweet either way - like having two bikes.

Re: New to me winter project.
Just to add, there aren't many times in my life where I wished I was a smaller dude. (well, ok.... in the pre-Tony Hawk 80's skater days I wished I was "normal" sized - I never could get good air) But I have to admit that the Vulcan I rode down from Detroit to Louisville and traded for the Voyager was a sweet bike.
It was gorgeous to look at, it handled and rode like a dream, it had ballsy torque from idle to redline,... and it sounded absolutely nasty.
But having already owned a V45 Magna before, I know that it just wasn't enough bike for my big ass.
I mean even as a "Harley clone", she drew loads of attention - every time I stopped, at least one person walked over to oggle and ask me about her.
It was far tougher to let go of her title to the Voyager owner that it was the 8 bills I handed her owner.
I had NO shame on her...

That Voyager is beautiful! I'm jealous of that original seat! None better. Wanna swap it for a Saddlemen custom seat?
Are you having the red panels re-painted, or just color-sanded and re-clear-coated? I'm debating about changing colors on mine. I saw one with fire-engine-red main color with black panels. Looked so good!

Re: New to me winter project.
I haven't found any bubbling on the tank yet, so I think I'll just clean it up and re-cote it, it's actually only the trunk lid and one bag lid that need be dealt with at this point.
I was stunned by the seat as well, It can't be the original - He must have found an OEM somewhere at some point.
Everything seems to work (didn't check the tape deck) All I can find it needs is the glove box lid.... like all of them do apparently.
If I get any more ride time this year, I'd like to monitor the fork pressure - I suspect they are leaking, but I didn't pay that much attention when I rode it home as I was focused on the more critical stuff, like how the hell I was gonna air up the tires - You ain't getting no gas station air hose on that back valve stem!
I finally stopped at a Wally World, bought a tiny lighter plug unit, cut the plug off, and held the wires to the battery until I filled them.
Thanks, Lucas..
I am a little sad that the LTD has a few more toys than the Voyager, (like the air shock compressor port to air up tires), but I'm still happy with my choice overall.

Re: New to me winter project.
I talked to him before I bought mine - Naturally, two days after I got mine home, he was willing to come WAY down on the price.
I'd say before winter's over you can get that bike for a song.

I would give him $1k for it right now! It looks really great! But, 30 years takes it's toll on the innards.

Re: New to me winter project.
Nice looking bike. My 88 is the same color scheme. Kind of makes me feel bad that I got mine for $200. It was in pieces though. All of the plastic and radiator had been removed and stored in his basement. Nothing a manual and some time couldn't fix. Now to get it running. Figure I will be in it for 500-600 more after new parts.
