replacement u-joints

Post by triton28 »

Hello;
has anyone used the replacement universal joint sold by atvworks.com under their part # XUJ702?
They list it as useable on the ZG1200 throughout the model years.
Thanks,
Dave

I have used a replacement u-joint from a larger 4wheeler Kawasaki, purchased it from Carl and I have a post with the number I believe. I would have to look but its been about 23K miles on it so far. It measured up exactly to what the old one was right down to the casting number/letter. I may have the part number out in the shop as I document things as I do PM on the bike. It was pricy at 100.00 and didn't come with new clips. But its was new and that's what I wanted. It can be replaced without the use of hammer and with a just an ARBOR press, with a split collar made up. I may still have them. Took about 2 hours my first replacement, that time is from when I had the shaft out in my hand. I had went first with one from another site listed as a replacement with a grease fitting in it. Close but no cigar and much weaker because its cross is drilled thru. and about .015 away from being an exact match. And I believe it was not exact in the cap diameter also. The company took it back and after reviewing what I had documented on measurements took it off of their site as a replacement, or so they said. When I got the one from Carl it all went together much quicker. So if you can't find a good used shaft assm. all is not lost. Gene Kap
PN / ( 49050 1002 -spider ) is the part number from Kawasaki Prairie atv

check out post named Noise/Vibration page 2 for photos of the one listed by atvworks
A Quote from that post:
(" However I have been told that an OEM u-joint listed for the Kaw. Prairie 400 atv part # 49050-1002 listed on the microfiche as a "SPIDER" IS the same part and has been used in the Vulcan 1500/1600/ and the 1200 ", )

If you go that route, and you see it has grease, Do Not Add any more grease, it will not press together properly and PUSH the new seal out of the needle cup.

Gene;
thank you for the info. I had R&R"d mine last year due to a slow rotation in one direction. After cleaning and inspecting the mating surfaces, I did sparingly grease it with Honda Moly grease and it seems to be holding up OK. But, one always has to keep an eye on a part which has exhibited an irregularity.
Thanks again,
Dave Taylor

There is a drive shaft on Ebay right now for a good price.
I'd go after this myself but I have 2 on the shelf
