I have a 97 XII and love it. The PO removed the center stand but included it when he sold it to me. I have looked on the forum and the manual but have had no luck. What are the steps to install the stand? Does the exhaust have to be removed? Thank you in advance.

You don't HAVE TO remove the exhaust. But you will remove the exhaust heat shield clamps if they are in your way. (small two piece clamps) Also you may have to remove or loosen the exhaust pipe clamp bolts and rotate the clamps a little to make it easier to get the bolts in the side stand. It is hard to get the bolts in because it is on the side stand but doable, but if you can jack up the XII without the jack getting in the way it would be easier or have something to lean it on the right side. Having the correct wrench ( short ratchet box end makes the job easier. Also Lube everthing before you put it on the XII & if you have a brake spring tool it makes putting the stand spring on easier. Make sure that the center stand has no bent or twisted parts on it, cause I can't think of why anyone would take it off unless it did not work right. And the plate where the large lever is attached is where they get bent, that plate has to be exactly parallel to leg. It can be bent by trying to force it down while trying to use it on uneven surface, or if air is to low in shocks. Take your time and think it thru before you start. pia, but maybe a 30min job.

Thank you Doug this is exactly what I needed. The PO took it off because he kept scraping it. I guess he liked the twisties. I have the brake spring tool and a motorcycle jack. I will tackle this weekend then on to the water hoses and seals.

I like the twisties way too much too, but have yet to scrape the center stand. My guess is the PO did not have enough air in the rear suspension (if any) and that is why he probably scraped. Keep the suspension in good shape with the correct air pressure (if still equipped with air shocks) and the Voyagers handle quite well and will lean over fairly far even considering they are a touring bike.jhlord wrote: The PO took it off because he kept scraping it. Re: Center Stand re-install
I have on occasion thought about removing the center stand for more clearance myself, except I park mine on the center stand to save room when parking at home. I do keep rear shocks up and switched over to a taller car tire on the rear which gave me a little more room to lean, and still drag mine quite often. You can tell the difference on the right hand turns, you get to lean a little farther before hard parts start dragging, so maybe the previous owner really did just hit the turns pretty hard, you can on the xii for sure.

I appreciated the early warning feature of the scraping sound. It's the sound of luck running out. As long as it's audible, I'm good. I've wore the round completely off the formed tube. It still has its length, but the inside diameter now constitutes the bottom as well.
As far as I can tell, cap nuts on footpegs and exhaust clamp bolts are the next warning.
