I have used low level loop polyester or nylon carpet with the mesh backing, and have had the edges of the carpet bound after it was fitted to the perimeter shape. The binding keeps the cut edges from fraying. To have the binding done is a cost per lineal foot of edge, and any good carpet installation business will know what firms are offering the service in the local area.
Any type of pile carpet would work but the mesh backed low level loop is only about 1/4 inch or so thick and being polyester or nylon it wears like iron. Dark colours are best for obvious reasons.
Rubber backed doesn't stand up well and degrades with time and usage.

That was the idea. Bottoms aren't smooth, so I was thinking of making a mold or pouring liquid silicone in to smooth out the bottom. The factory liners are cheap.

Use the stock rubber piece as a mold and get some cheap 1/8th or 1/4 inch plywood. cut it to match the mold. Wrap it in black felt or fleece from walmart and staple to the bottom of the plywood. Looks nice and adds support for heavy objects carried in the bags. Will save the bottom from cracking out.

He did a dash cover for me and I talked to him about saddlebag/trunk carpet a while back. Never went through with it but might in the future.
