Riding out of the country.................

Post by JosephToulouse »

Hello All!!

I'm a new Member, been riding bikes 40 years, (lot's of fun ,indeed!).

I recently bought a 94 Voyager XII with 42,000 miles on it. rebuilt the forks,
serviced it, and have put on about 1500 miles on it...a solid bike indeed!!
My question is, has anyone ever taken one and road in different countries?

Seems like everyone rides BMW's or KLR's........(not that their bad bikes!!).

also.........anyone ever had ignition module problems?? from what I've read, it's usually
stator and or battery problems.........

Thanks!!

Joseph (Kingman,Arizona,USA.).

.....Welcome to the forum !..... I have no experience with taking any bike touring thru another country
As far as the ignition module...... you having a 94' ....your way past the early years "trouble models" .
I think the bad module # ends 1179......and good is ending #1248...... ? NO worries for yours.
As far as "stator" trouble.... that is more of a goldwing issue, If you have charging system issues, your bike has the fastest, easiest change out alternator , type system ....a few screws ,and wire disconnects ...and your done ! try that on a wing ! :tho: ..........again WELCOME...great group of folks here.!

As long as you ride paved roads, in good condition, the Voyager will not be an issue. Many of the folks I've seen riding KLR's, and BMW's, were riding dual-sport bikes, to allow them to ride on/off road. We've ridden ours in the USA, and Canada, without issue. We also avoid non-paved roadways (two-up, do NOT want to try gravel roads with the bike heavily loaded). We went on a gravel shoulder once, on our Honda 750, and the rear tire could not grip, until the wife hopped off, and pushed me, and the bike, up the slight incline... We had new tires on that bike, and even when she hopped off, I could not get enough traction up a slight incline, to get back to the tar roadway. The Voyager is even heavier, with much more power to tear the tire loose. No thanks. Cheers!

There is a Voyager club in Germany. I've heard from riders in the UK and Australia. And lets not forget our Northern friends.

The xii does well both in rain and on gravel roads solo or 2 up. One of the destinations we like to head out to here comes with a 10 mile stretch of gravel road (bike always gets a bath when I get home from there). I currently run a Nexan car tire on the rear and an E-3 on the front.
