Issue with headlight replacement

Post by Mr Jensee »

I did a little searching but unless the answer is on the 153rd page of the search function I can't find it. Saturday we went for a nice ride since the weather was great. When I started the bike the HEADLIGHT indicator on the dash seemed to indicate I had a burnt bulb. Switching between high and low the headlight appeared to be working fine. Once I got home I went to the local autoparts and picked up a new Silver Star H4 bulb with the same wattage and pulled the light and replaced it. The light works fine except the light on the dash is still not going off AND there is a low pitched squealing coming from the dash when on low beam. Any idea what I am doing wrong here?? Anybody ever have this problem?

Relay flopping on/off fast, coincidence thing happening? I'm not even sure if the relay up near the dash. Just a shot. Reserve lighting device?

Hi Michael,
A few years ago I had my low beam filament burn out. When that happened I also had the low pitched squealing sound coming from the dash when on low beam. It would go away when switched to hi beam. When I replaced the bulb the noise went away. Are you handy with a volt/ohm meter? You might have a break in the wire for low beam, or hopefully the new bulb is defective? There are several people on this site that are electrical wizards that may be able to help you troubleshoot. More information is needed at this point.

I am leaning on the idea that the reserve lighting unit is bad. I have an ohm meter, the old headlight bulb is ok. Online a new lighting unit goes for $140 so it will be a while before I can get that replaced. When I am feeling better I plan to check out everything thoroughly. Thanks for the replies. Any ideas are welcome at this point.
