Re: Saddle bags
Ordered one about 4 months ago from Bikebandit.com. $299.99. Already painted the proper red for a 2001 Voyager XII. It did not have the top door and the gasket, but I didn't need them. I just transplanted them from the one I had. I am sure if you included them the cost would go up.

Re: Saddle bags
most people have to have it all as the most common thing is a lost lid. the extra items really add up, for example the compartment latch is $28 and the gasket is $33. most colors are no longer available so many have to factor in paint work. this is a great time to remind owner to make good tethers.

...Am agreeing with Carl...... almost lost control of a lid ,on my first ride of the season !
after having everything apart, during the winter....forgot to secure one top of R.H.bag lid .
glad I caught it in time....so I would not be that guy looking for a lid !
(yes I had my lid "tethered" but un-did it for a better method).... ....tony

Ok Tony, the suspense is killing me. ( better method ) inquiring minds want to know. Like you I have at times forgot to lock mine as well, I now leave the key in the latch whenever I take mine off as to not forget to lock them.Lucasind wrote:...Am agreeing with Carl...... almost lost control of a lid ,on my first ride of the season !

Re: Saddle bags
Hello Gene, glad to hear your feeling better, our friend "trikbldr" has'nt been around lately either....
I hope he did'nt have to go back into the hospital.
anyway ....about the lid tether...I'm not doing anything ground breaking in that area,I'm doing the thin cable thing, messin around with suitable lengths and such.
I just got my new front e-3 delivered to the house yesterday... and am going to get a nexen ct for the rear soon,I'm thinking I'm going to take the wheels to the shop for install and will probably do this a couple of weeks apart.I usually do my own wheel work, and have never had a shop do my tires, is this a sign of getting tired of working so much ? My avon's served me well, but I can tell that the front one especially is going bad. As you know, having tire problems out on the road can really ruin a otherwise fun trip ! Had both Voyagers out for a ride on Monday, the temps never did get up to what was forcasted and the sky was overcast, but both bikes are running great ! I really rode that 6 cylinder HARD for the first time ,and it took the pounding and wanted more ! I am very pleased with that purchase....$1450. well spent ! the only part I didn't like was coughing up the $500. shipping fee from CT to OH ! again glad ur feeling better !.....................tony

Re: Saddle bags
Having them locked doesn't seem to make a difference - lost mine during 70 mph pass, luckily I saw it fly off and managed to get to it before it got run over. I checked both latches and they were still locked. Not sure what Mama Kaw did with these bags - I don't recall hearing about other touring rigs having this kind of trouble. Tethers are all well and good, but the latches themselves seem to be an issue. When mine flew off the forward latch was bent a little, maybe that's part of the issue, cheap latches?

Re: Saddle bags
When the bags are latched and locked the lid should be snug and not move. If this is happening examine the latch itself on the bag and make sure the catch is not bent and the rivets are tight. If you make tethers I would suggest they only be long enough to open the bag and suspend the lid on the side just below the opening. Any longer and you risk snapping the tether should the lid pop off at high speed. I used nylon weed whacker line for my tethers, they don't scratch the paint and can withstand a sudden release of the lid. BTW, while surfing Ebay the other day I saw a complete left side saddle bag with lid on there for less than I paid for a lid. It was white and gold but it was complete. I replaced my lid not because I lost it but because it was split at the latch point and I had lost a chunk of the plastic.

Re: Saddle bags
The old 1100 and 1200 Goldwings had similar issues. I had leashes installed on my lids for my GL1100, and have them on my VXII too. I've never had an issue with the lids popping off to begin with, but I know folks who have, and it's almost always because the latch wasn't locked and/or it wasn't properly secured. I always triple check mine when I have to go into the bags to make sure they're secure before taking off.Wahrsuul wrote:Having them locked doesn't seem to make a difference - lost mine during 70 mph pass, luckily I saw it fly off and managed to get to it before it got run over. Re: Saddle bags
When it comes time to make the tethers here is a thread I started when I began experimenting with different methods/lengths before arriving at the final product on my '86 XII.
http://www.amervoyassoc.org/forum/viewt ... 2&start=20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There are many other ways to skin this particular cat and I guess the universal guideline is to keep the tethers very short.

I have an 86' parts bike that I bought and if you are needing a lid I would sell you the one you need off the 86' for $175. It of course will need to be repainted to match your bike. You can call me at 785-822-4459 Kelly

Voyager55,my medicare part A jumped 40% and dropped vision care, and my wifes premium went down slightly, but jumped deductible and co-pay.I am having my roofer come tomorrow and give me a price on my replacement.Hopefully I can come up with a better idea on my budget for the year then.voyager55 wrote:You must of read your bill wrong. obama says insurance would cost less
