Just got out for the first ride on the new to me voyager 100 km and ran great I do have some transmission whine at varying speeds so I am going to give the backlash adjustment and rear drive oil change a go but I also notice the cruise control does not work no lights on the tank cover at all is there any troubleshooting tips that I haven't found.

Check your fuses and make sure the unit is plunged in under the flax tank.
Sounds like there is no power to the unit on the tank

I have found that mine sometimes fails to engage on the highway. Check all the disengage switches at the back brake, handlebar to make sure they haven't gotten dirty. A little contact cleaner sprayed on them helps. When this happens I have found that none of the lights work on the cruise control panel. Also spray the contacts on the engage button on handlebar.

Personally can't see how the engage switches would give no lights at all on the unit. More likely the plug under the cover or fuses (but not knowledgeable enough to dispute the possibility). Also a broken wire or even one of the plug connectors slid back from making connection inside the molex (type of connector plug). I have seen that more times than can remember.
If not done previously though the contact switches would help from cleaning. Also, be prepared to adjust the cam unit (the unit that pulls the cable that is attached to the carbs) under the right side plastic next to the radio amp. Mine had never been adjusted (look there also for wiring connection issues if the above doesn't help). Love long trips when this works (wife is jealous-simple throttle lock on her Vulcan).

If any one of those switches is sticking the unit will not come on the lights on the tank cover panel won't come on. At least on my 2001 it won't. Just went for a ride to check it out. Pulling the brake lever in slightly and no matter how much I pushed the button it acted as if it were dead. I let go at cruising speed and it engaged. I just had to test it to be sure.

Could be the relay under the headlight or on mine it was the white 10 pin comnnector under the left fairing that was intermittent causing the relay to fail.

So I decided to check the obvious and found the on light bulb was burned out. So now when I press the button it turns on but the cruise still does not engage at cruising speeds nor does the set light come on. I have sprayed the contacts with no change and am going to pull out the meter and do some continuity tests on the contacts.

Ok, so the switches (thank you Mr Jensee ) are a double throw (contact when engaged, and another contact when disengaged) switch. My '03 would come on if i pushed forward the hand brake lever, but as soon as i hit a bump it would disconnect. I finally replaced that switch (kept trying to adjust it). Actually simple and not expensive (less than $10 at the time-contact cleaner can only help so much on a sealed switch). It helped that it worked (made finding where the issue was) and that trial and error showed what the problem was. Without that help, I think the meter is required.
Chris in Kansas gave a tutorial on adjusting the electric cam device that pulls the cable. My bike had only 17k on it when I bought it from my son in November 2011 and yet the cam had never been adjusted and couldn't pull the cable enough to keep engaged on even the slightest hill. I had to hold on the set button until it finally engaged, but then their wasn't enough rotation left to increase the throttle much at all.
I got both issues finally dealt with in 2012 and it has been working like a champ ever since (i use it all the time).
