Let's talk "chrome"

Post by randallar »

I would like to get a little more bling. I think floorboard covers are a must and clutch and front bevel covers chromed or professionally polished. Maybe front fork sanctions also. Lower front fender chrome, side chrome pieces on the fairing and saddle bags. But finding these are very difficult and at a decent price impossible. I have thought of making the covers for the fender, side and boards from aluminum and polish them but chrome is better. Anybody out there that has done some creative chroming or find someone that makes some. I know about the floorboard covers, $45 each though. Has anyone had their engine covers chromed and at what cost. I don't think these bikes need all that massive chrome but some in right places makes them stand out. Any comments and pics would be greatly appreciated.

....The floorboard covers will make a big improvement .

Hated the way this looked...

Got these used ones from Carl awhile back...

Gene Kap also makes some highly polished pieces that look like chrome. Scott recently made a post showing some of the pieces.

The Plating House in Toronto, Ontario recently chromed clutch covers and bevel gear covers for me. The last year 2014 price was $175.00CDN for the clutch cover and $200.00CDN for the bevel cover. It makes a huge visual impact.

Too much chrome on this bike for me as it is.... Already had the front crash bars, passenger handles and the trunk rack powdercoated. Partly because they were a bit rusted when I got the bike.

I agree the floorboard covers are first. The clutch and bevel covers next. But just those it's looking like almost $500. What's the price for Gene Kap's covers and does he make the covers for the side fairings and saddle bags as in these. [img][/img] Does anyone make or have (at a reasonable price) lower front fender chrome. My fender is a little cracked up and I need to hide and beautify. Also what about clutch and brake levers are they interchangeable with some other model to get chrome aftermarket ones.

Great! Those are just what I need. Just let me know. Just had to show you what I did this morning. I have my forks completely apart ( I didn't plan on it but they wouldn't have it any other way). Check this out! Image As Burt on Tremors would say, just a few household chemicals in the proper proportion.

That fork lower looks great ! Most times it's best to do it that way, (disassembled) easier to get those kind of results. Also can get a look at other internal parts and evaluate their condition then new seals and fluid....and your done ! Well done !........................tony :-D

I would grease the head bearings, but I think I'm opening up a can of worms that I might not want to deal with after the bike is all back together. They are not loose and turn fine and I do not have any wobble or issues at all with the front end. I know it's definitely due and probably has never been done but I'll wait for next fork oil change and do it then or take a couple of days to do it right. You are right that I should do it now I just don't trust that I won't jack it up and look like one of those cars you see with a bent frame, the front end going one way and rear end going the other. I love shining my bike, grass too high, nah gotta shine the bike, gutters need cleaned, ooh I see a spot gotta shine the bike. Hurry Summer!

Steve Do: The only thing I really need now, other than options, is the left inner cowling (where the cassettes go and the lower vent and the fader is) mine is broken on the bottom. Mine got layed over on it's side a couple owners ago and it got broken. There are 4 of them on Ebay and all of them are 86's. I just would have assumed that yours is also broken since it was hit on that side. If not shoot me a price. Thanks

The saddle,bag/cowl/trim 4peice set will be at the rally, I am finishing 11 sets for sale. Price has not been determined for the set as of this date. It will be set as soon as the die for bending the radius on the bag trim is finished. They are .06 stainless, #8mirror finish, with the same bolt hole location for those looking for replacement of same.
I will have 8 sets of front vent trim, 8 sets of the light/weight mirror trim and 10 sets of the larger mirror trim, and 12 trunk mirror replacements, at the rally. Still working out the forming bugs on the front fender skirt. I am hoping to have a few at the rally.
Due to increased manufacture costs the front vent trim had to be raised to 75.00 a set. Sockets remain the same price but are a special order with a 2 week lead time. Kevin Wanner is now making the turn-signal module with the added feature of plug @ play connector. No wire splice.
The mirror trim , both styles are now at 86.65 . Sorry for this guys but it is still below the original retail price of when they were available. Material and machine costs have gone up quite a bit.
I am not taking any orders until I have my stock ready for the rally, as I am still working a 50hr week at my daytime job.
I have to do all these water-jet parts in sets of 8 due to machine costs and can no longer run a set at a time for sale. Once these sets are finished for the rally, I will do more runs and have some stock for sale during the year. Gene Kap.

BAG / COWL / TRIM UPDATE

Image

Well getting close, after making a die-set to match the oem's I did a few and it matched the original set that Kevin lent me. To my surprise I put it up on my saddle bag and :dm: it came up 1/4 " short at the rear end of the bags black plastic. After pacing the shop floor and a few off-color words and very upset that I wasted time with this die, I put the original on and seen that was the problem. I matched the oem !!!! it was 1/4 " short also. So whats up with that. Do I have a bad set of the originals or is that what they offered ? Does anyone that has the OEM on their bike have that issue. So with 26 of them done and drilled and ready to be formed, I remade another die-set and changed the wrap-around X target dim. by 3/16 and that gave me just .06 reveal of the plastic in the back. I would love to know if others that have the original ones , if it does not cover all the plastic in the back of the bag ??????
OR where there any slight changes Ma-Kaw done on the dimensions of the bags. Mine is a 2000, and I need to know before I make all the sets up. Time is moving fast and the rally is going to be here before I know it. I had to change the dimensions of the vents and the mirror trim when I did those to make them fit better. Can any one chime in and let me know. Thanks Gene Kap.

I have them on my "03, and they are 1/4" short also. To be honest I never noticed that! The black surface behind them is tapered all around and I don't think it looks bad. Just my 2 cents worth.
