so where does a person get those brass threaded inserts for in the plastic? I like the idea of putting the new ones in the spots where the faint impressions are on the base of the seat.

Do you need any special tools to put them in?

....Hello Tony...... If I had to do it over again, I would just "hog out"the slots and re-locate the seat position lock ....as shown in the second example ! you can buy the inserts at lowes or home depot.
It's two ways of gaining a inch !.....Do what you will......................tony :-D

Got off work a bit early today and took the XII out for a nice long ride....2-up and after we got back ,something didn't seem right....after a quick exam, turns out half of the brass inserts had pulled out,so I ended up returning the seat set-up back to stock....oh well..nothing ventured ,nothing gained .also there is no harm ,no foul ! Once again...If doing this over....I would use the second example. IMHO.

I found some inserts that thread into the plastic and I used some JB weld around the threads as I screwed them in. Will see how they hold.
