the reason I made these is because I'm missing one and the other is so freakin hard to untwist it makes me mad...LOL I used a small piece of vinyl siding to hold the 1/4" screw in place, I had to cut out a section of the head so it sits down flush in the plastic area, vinyl keeps it tight and in place...Much easier for me now.. I also added a small rubber spacer to the knob...Someone can use wing nuts and a lock washer too but I wanted a knob... the original knob was a real pain sometimes... I painted the knobs flat black..... Bam Done...Finished photo... Not bad..

I do believe this is the first post I have seen where someone had to "re-do" these tank fasteners...... as our be-loved old Voyagers pass from one owner to the next, we inherit someone else's "I been meaning to get around to fixing that"... and it never gets done..........till YOU get er done !............................tony
I had made some wooden knobs for my Nomad years ago,,, Quick release knobs for the luggage boxes (saddlebags) they bolt on so I put knobs on it so I didn't have to break out the socket set.. It just carried over to this,, Am I the only one having trouble turning those plastic knobs?
I had fun stomping on that silly plastic cap, the rubber bushing thingamajiggy was torn in half anyway,,, I just wanted something that works proper is all....1/4" is a very common size I bet a guy could find some really nice knobs to fit the bolt.....Creativity never ends...Just a little thought...
I bet I can turn this one ... I just found a boatload of 1/4 knobs on the Intro Net... I am always doing something strange so stay tuned....and I like photo's...More guys should post photo's...
Why did you order new ones,, did they break? Or it get lost? I didn't want to fight with it ever again, I had to get channel locks to turn the stupid thing..... I thought to myself,, man there's gotta be a better way... New one's???? wait that would be like intelligent....LOL Naw,,,, I like mine thanks...I will get new cool knobs though. ..I might just order some new ones too, thanks SGT...

I broke my first one not long after getting the bike. I purchased replacements (think I got 2 expecting) and then found that if I push down on the faux tank over the top (if aligned properly) that I don't have an issue. I admit though, they do still take some finger strength, but not bad if everything is aligned with pressure applied.
I do like the creativity of the knobs. Ace hardward, i think, might be a good source for a nylon/plastic knob to create your own. Only issue with wood is the bike does get wet (or you never go anywhere, nor wash it) and they will swell and shrink with time and humidity (or lack of, should see a guitar not humidified in Colorado in the winter).

One of mine was missing when I bought it. I used zip-ties to secure the faux tank for a season, then I got tired of them after I had to remove the tank a couple of times -- had to cut them off each time, then put new ones on. OEM knob works great, and no side-cutter's necessary to remove the faux tank anymore! Cheers!
The side bags require nothing more than pulling on a ring attached to a spring loaded pin which releases the unit. For me the toughest part of removing the side bags is separating the little wire connection, there doesn't seem to be too much excess to work with.

Mine didn't come with the tank knobs at all, the tank has a tendancy to rise up when riding. I'd figured on buying one oem one and seeing what I could fab up....
Ok but they are expensive little cuss's... the one on ebay was $20 each one.. another one wanted $26 just for one.. I couldn't find one on Bike Bandit, might be looking in the wrong area...I just could see it.. remember you could always use wing nuts and a lock washer.....
