electrical issue and out of town
My problem is that the bike will start but will shut off withou notice. If i turn the steering wheel it shuts off but not all the time. The bike stayed running and i was driving and the headlight turned off but i was able to keep driving in the dark. The light turned back on after a couple of blocks. Good thing i was in town. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: electrical issue and out of town
My first thought would be to check the kickstand switch (it will kill the engine if it is down). Less likely would be an intermittent handlebar kill switch. otherwise, you will have to wait for the more knowledgeable as i don't believer either of those would affect the headlight (could be a separate problem). You might check you battery connections(??????????).Mart656 wrote:My problem is that the bike will start but will shut off withou notice. Good Luck!!

Re: electrical issue and out of town
I would be willing to bet it's the main cable run going from the handlebar down the neck of the steering column has a broken wire in it particularly if the tie strap was or still is holding it to tight on the neck of the steering. This is a very common problem.

Re: electrical issue and out of town
I had those issues on my '99, and rewired the harness leading to the ignition switch as part of my winter 2013-2014 service.

Re: electrical issue and out of town
Well I figured out it not the kickstand switch, and I checked out the connector just after the fuse block. I do believe it to be the the main cable run going from the handlebar down the neck of the steering column. I'm not a mechanic but am not afraid to try to do new things. How difficult is is to switch the cable and where can I get a new one?
Thanks again for the tips. I did make it home.

Re: electrical issue and out of town
Carlos, with the fake tank off and bike running slowly wiggle each wire and as you handle each work your fingers from the top to the farthest point. When I ran into the wiring harness problem my bike would lose ALL power with handlebars turned left when backing into a parking space. A few times it would return to running if I straightened out the bars quickly enough. My issue was a broken wire at the wire-tie just a few inches from the ignition switch along the left side of the frame. I found the wire in question, cut, stripped and added a splice wire just an once long to jump the gap. That was 4 years ago and its been fine since!
Slowly moving each wire to test while running was how I found the break. The wire insulation appeared fine, as it was an internal break. Many others have ran into the same issue.

Re: electrical issue and out of town
Make sure the wire tie is cut off of the wire to the ignition switch, from what you described you have broken wires in that cable.
What I do is take a utility knife and slit the cover to expose the wires, be careful not to cut into the wires.
Then take each wire individually and grab each end and pull on them if the wire is broke the cover will stretch where it's broke fairly easy.
To repair them you can Souder and shrink sleeve them(probably the best way) or you can use wire crimp connectors.
Then put the wires back into the cover and electrical tape it together.
DO NOT put the wire tie back on!!

Re: electrical issue and out of town
Chevyman1 you were correct the problem is with the wire to the igniton switch. Do I use a plastic tie to group the cables together. The problem was at the point where the wires were bundled and tied together. thanks

Re: electrical issue and out of town
I just put the plastic cover back around the wires and use a good quality electrical tape to wrap it with, Then just leave it float freely.

Re: electrical issue and out of town
I wanted to thanks those for the advice. I was able to get it fixed today. My fat fingers were not able to crimp the wire together so my 17 year old did it for me and he did a pretty good job at it. I was able to solder it wrap it up with electrical tape.I did not use the ties as suggested and will let it flow freely. Thanks again all. I will be going for a ride tomorrow
