speedo needle shaking

Post by leghorn1956 »

Good morning folks. My speedo needle started shaking while riding and registering 20 to 30 klms slower than i was going . All was fine and then it happened. Everything else is working. Just this issue.
Hope its an easy fix. Thanks again for all the help.

Pull the speedo cable - clean and grease and re-install.

Also to add; If that does not solve it you may need to re-grease the speedo gear.

I'm still trying to work on that problem and remedy before inspection (required item in PA).

It is a new cable and all greased up. The gear at the wheel has also been greased. Since everything else associated with the cable is working, i think it my be something electronic with the guage. Is the speedo guage mechanical; if so ,something might be broken. Ahhh. I'm just babling... I don't have a clue. Help.

It is possible that the pinion gear is worn in the speedo hsg making it skip, If you pull the pinion and look at it it may show wear , the gear itself will not be straight, looking at it the long way it will have a slight dip from end to the other. Another way to check , if it is in speedo or gear,or elec, is if you have a high speed drill make sure you are turning it the correct way for the speedo and run it up and see if it skips if it does not it is more than likely is the pinion gear. And if it is the pinion gear replace both the pinion and the ring gear or you will have same problem very shortly as a new gear against a worn gear does not last very long. Hope this helps.

I'd also check where the speedo cable attaches to the speedometer. Sometimes the nut loosens and will cause the same thing.

I caught mine when I had to pull the covers to put in my speakers. It wasn't shaking yet, but it was loose.

All's good. Almost bought a used unit for the front wheel... but how do i know the condition of it's gears. New gears and receiver, as the later had been damaged prior. $40 Canadian... that's like $30 for you Americans.
Again ... thanks for all the help.

The only way to tell if the gears in a used unit are good,is to take it apart, clean it ,and do a close inspection for any distortion of the gears. If they look like fresh cut gears, pack them with grease, reasemble the unit and install. :corn:

If you think the axle hub driver is bad, take the cable from the hub, attach a drill to it and run the drill. If no bounce, then it's the hub.

Be sure to run the drill in reverse!
