Radio volume

Great forum! I just picked up a 1986 voyager with 60,000 miles. I have two questions 1st at this milage is there anything I should watch for. 2nd is there a way to test the radio amp? It is currently unplugged. When I plug the connectors in I have nothing from the speakers. Unplugged the volume level is too low to hear while riding. There is power and ground at the amp. I took the amp apart, no cold shoulder joints that I could see

First WELCOME! Now just to be safe and make sure you get to enjoy your Voyager XII for hundreds of thousands of more miles please, PLEASE check the igniter on your bike. Carl Leo is a master mechanic and owner of more Voyager's than anyone I know, below is a quote from another thread concerning igniters......

if you have an 86 or 87 voyager xii and there is no markings on the igniter it is almost 100% that you do not have the updated igniter. the 21119-1248 was clearly marked with paint, the early 21119-1179 igniter was very lightly stamped with a stencil.........carl

Here is another thread to read also which covers the subject. A simple check of this item can eliminate a lot of concern and worry. Also you will be getting lots of advice from lots of wonderful folks here. Like oil changes requiring only 3 qts + 22 ozs of oil, no more no less. Forget about the sight glass and remember all 3 drain plugs when changing the oil.

As for the amp, we Peter Franchi is a forum member and most would say expert on the radios and associated components. His forum name is suzib6sw and I would be willing to bet if someone else doesn't provide you with an answer on the amp he will. Post subject: Igniter question

We have a regional chapter of the AVA which is the Mid-Atlantic Voyagers, our group covers NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, OH, VA & WV. If you see any post about a gathering or ride-in you are absolutely welcome to join in and check out all the other Voyagers as well as other makes the folks ride.

Oh with the volume issue check to see if the HS button is pushed on the radio. That diverts the sound from the speakers to the Headsets if you have a "Y" cord and intercoms in the helmets. There are also mute buttons on the left handlebar controls as well as rear controls for the passenger to use (or if the passenger wants to mess with the driver while your riding)!

Hey I need some insight on this issue just bought my first full dresser and voyager at the same time its a 92 and the radio is too quiet so any help would be great

Mike, check the Mute buttons (handlebars and rear passenger controls), if either of them are pressed you won't get any or very little sound. Also check the HS button on the radio, that's redirects the sound for Head Sets and will have a profound affect on your volume.

Wow I feel like an idiot I thought out was on and in was off but I still want the radio louder because above 65 I can't hear the bob and tom show on my commute

Loved listening to Bob & Tom in the mornings w/Christie Lee!
I've adjusted the fader so only the front speakers play and with the volume up I don't seem to have any issues at higher speeds but the rear passenger gets robbed of entertainment. Oh well they're riding for free anyway!
Check the auto volume adjust control, your volume should if adjusted increase above a certain speed (can't remember if it's 25, 35 or what now). Its the outside adjuster of the right knob on the radio it's self.

Today I replaced the 3 amp fuse and all worked fine, got all back together and pressed buttons to make sure all worked AND the HS button will not turn off. The on parts of the bike removed was the headlight cowling and headlight itself.

I was not able to find the fuse holder with the coil, using a normal holder.

I think there is a screw that comes loose that causes the HS button to stay on
