Sport Shield!
Ordered a new full-size shield this past Fall. It has been great for cold weather riding but not so much for warm weather. I took the old shield and cut it down using a table saw. This one is cut down to 7 inches above the fairing. The wind hits just at my shoulders which makes for a nice even flow around the helmet. Much cooler and the bike rides more nimble and less blown around by the wind.
To cut it, I just used a table saw and did a straight cut across the top and then used a can to mark the corners with a permanent marker. Shaved them to a nice curve and finished with a little sand paper.

Re: Sport Shield!
Looks good. I replaced my windshield after I put an aftermarket seat which raised me up just enough to catch all the wind. My old shield had been cut down so I wasn't sure what to buy. LSS, the new one is a tad too high and I'm looking thru the glass instead of over it. Not a problem in the cooler months but I'm thinking about just alternating them back and forth to allow more breeze in the summer. The Baker Air Wings should also help to re-direct some wind....
Always nice to have a "spare" anything that you can swap around. Good job!

Re: Sport Shield!
The difference with the short shield is huge. I think you will really enjoy it. I really love the way it handles too. I basically took the idea from the new F6B Goldwings with the short shield.
The interesting thing about cutting them down with a table saw is that with the curve of the windshield it creates a natural arc so it's really not hard to get a good cut.
The real trick with a short shield is to get it short enough otherwise the turbulence just hammers the helmet. I rode first without any shield just to see what that was like and it just put a little too much pressure on my shoulders so that's how I knew it should be pretty short.

Re: Sport Shield!
Here are my 2 Voyagers ...and as stated ,the height of the windsheild has HUGE affects on a bikes handling ! There are riding times ,when I would not wan't to be without the 4" taller...and 3"inch wider, that my V XII with the c bailey offers ! but the "shorty"on the F/I six 1300 is sure a different ride to say the least ! All said and done.... my vote goes to the protection that the big wind shield provides.... but the shorty sure can have it's merits for selected days of fun
The last time we got caught out far from home, in a isolated down pour...I was sure glad I picked the right bike that day !
Also took the new connie out farther than I thought I was gonna venture that day, and in windy conditions ,the power windshield was a AWESOME added feature that this old biker was not accustom to ! Heck, I rode for quite awhile ( in misery) before I remembered I had this "new fangled" option !
With the touch of a button I was AMAZED at the difference a quick adjustment of wind shield height
can make !
.
So many bikes ...with so many options... and not enough time to do more riding and enjoy ALL they have to offer !....................tony
By the way Dailey Rider....you did a great job decreasing the size of your wind shield !

Re: Sport Shield!
Great stuff on the different shields. Yes, they make a huge difference. Thanks! I hear that people cut down shields with a jig saw but I find a table saw to make it really easy to get a straight cut or even good clean curves.
BTW, I love the look and am intrigued by your blacked-out Voyager. I use my trunk constantly but have thought of going more that direction. My paint scheme is the black and turquoise. Have thought all black would bring it more up-to-date and would look really sharp. Can't tell from the pick but did you do the paint DIY?

Re: Sport Shield!
I cut my old one down last summer but the wind hit me right in the eyes.I had to ride with the face shield closed which I never do. I put the larger one back on after a week or so. Maybe I need to shave it down some more.

In fact , I did not paint my 1300 voyager...here is the story of how I came to acquire it .

Re: Sport Shield!
Shave it down more and it will hit you even lower. I mentioned before that I used to own a ZRX1100 with the stock shield the wind would deflect to hit me in the chest which was fine for highway riding because it took the pressure off my wrists. I eventually changed over to taller windshield with a curved lip at the top. This deflected the wind to just at my forehead on the highway which was less tolerable for long distance riding but better for around town. As for now the full shield with the added vent in it on my Voyager is the best of all worlds. And yes it gets very hot riding in summer in Louisiana.Rich in New Jersey wrote:I cut my old one down last summer but the wind hit me right in the eyes.I had to ride with the face shield closed which I never do.
