Throttle Lock for an "86?
Just like it says - any '86 owners out there using a throttle lock they'd recommend?
It would be nice to get some right hand relief while maintaining speed. I had an inexpensive Vista Cruise unit on my '82 GL500I but it appears to be too thick to mount on the XII.
You lucky rascals with cruise on your '87 and newer bikes can appreciate why I want something 'similar' - lol

Re: Throttle Lock for an "86?
I have used one of these on my wifes vulcan on a 1000 mile RT.
http://www.amazon.com/2Wheel-Ride-GC-1- ... ottle+lock" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Simple to use and nothing to install, but I don't know if it will fit the stock Voyager grips (maybe try it later just to see). Actually, might be a good idea to have on the bike (in storage) in case my CC stops working (it did for a 1k miles a couple of years ago. the sender froze up when I was 1/2 way through a trip).
Just sayin....

Re: Throttle Lock for an "86?
I have put the same Vista-Cruise on 3 different XII's, worked for over 25 years and over 400,000mi. You need the one with the tab on the bottom that fits in the space between the cables moving the grip out a little is no problem with aftermarket grips and you can file the center of the Vista to fit the grip. just a little filing, but very easy to get to work. I like the thumb cruise much better than the electric cruise.chicagorandy wrote:Just like it says - any '86 owners out there using a throttle lock they'd recommend?

Re: Throttle Lock for an "86?
I picked up an aftermarket auto type cruise control for my first 86 1300.Worked great until I got hit by a cage.When I tried to switch it to my next bike I broke a wire and never got it to work again.Recently picked one up on fleabay for under $100 for my present 84 but have not found time to install it yet.

Re: Throttle Lock for an "86?
Quick question - 1" or 7/8" handlebar size?
I am looking at the Kury:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002VV ... _i=desktop" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Or the Vista:

Re: Throttle Lock for an "86?
The Vista unit doug showed arrived today - but it is far too thick to fit in the space between the grip bosses and the switch on the handlebar.
So I dunno.

Re: Throttle Lock for an "86?
It is plastic just make it fit.. A file or small grinder to narrow the tab. I drilled a hole in in the tab and there is a little chrome plate that you take off of cables that fits between the cables and drill a hole in it and there is a screw in the housing I think that I used or got another longer one and put it thru the plate, tab and into the housing to hold the Vista in place, I also had to file the little ridges on the plastic throttle piece that the grip goes over so the Vista did not drag on them and I think I had to file the inside diameter of the Vista to get the exact fit on the throttle I wanted.
Was not at all difficult, maybe half hour. Patients & will and you can get it to work .. Any questions pm me or we could do a phone thing..
Do you have stock grips? (I did not have stock grips) I use the sponge pistol grip ones and I think they are shorter. Or you can make them shorter. by cutting piece out of middle or the outside end.

I have the stock grips. Filing off the ridges on the throttle tube sounds like the answer thanks a million Doug.

Re: Throttle Lock for an "86?
A quick follow-up ont the throttle lock install. I broke off the 'tabs' on the throttle tube and ground down the remaining bits with a dremel and then followed up with some 400 and 600 grit sandpaper to smooth things out.
I also slightly enlarged the ID of the Vista Cruise throttle lock ring and ground off areas that were rubbing on the end of the rubber handlebar grip.
It still needs a road test and some wearing in - the throttle does not yet go back to idle by itself when I let go - but I suspect it will free up with some use, if not then off it will come and some additional grinding will happen.
i DO look forward to being able to give the old pre-arthritic hand and wrist a rest now and then.
