Squeak At Windshield/Windshield mounting

Post by flip18436572 »

I did 505 miles in the last 24 hours going to a training class and coming home afterwards. Their has been a squeak in the front end area since I have owned the bike, and I always thought it was the crappy radio. I pushed up and outward on the top of the shield and the squeak went away. Everything is tight, but it still has the squeak.

Any ideas????

Take the chrome piece off at the bottom of the windshield and inspect the mounting screws. The windshield could be cracked where it bolts to the fairing.

Does anyone have pictures of the proper bolts and screws used on the wind shield? My bike has been sooooo screwed up by the two previous owners, that I have no idea if anything is right anymore.

I had to go to a training class, so I rode the XII to Spirit Lake, IA, and the squeaking was driving me nuts. 505 miles in total. I was ready to throw the shield in the ditch.

It's not the shields fault. I'm guessing that the mounting bolts and screws are your problem. There are two screws on each side of center I believe that mount to two tabs on the frame, there is two smaller all threaded screws that screw into two small plastic round nuts that fit into the fairing on each fairing half. I would bet that these two round plastic "nuts" that press fit into each fairing half is probably broken or missing as most people overtighten and break these. There is also two bolts that should have a rubber "hat" that goes over it in the middle of the two bolts that hold each mirror on. Check all of these, I'm betting one or more of them is your problem. If it is the plastic nuts, you may have to remove each fairing half to install them correctly. Then be careful you don't overtighten them when reinstalling the shield.

Flip,
I just had mine apart last week to replace the choke cable and install a "y" cord. If there aren't any pics for you later I'll tare mine down and get you a pic after work if it isn't raining. Hang tight buddy!

I'll have to start being diligant about snapping photos when I do anything like other have, that way I'll have them available for others as well as show what not to do!

Flip here you go, made it home and rain hasn't started yet! Pic's might be a bit large but they should work for you.
Photo of trim with mirror removed (2 screws for each mirror, one rubber gasket for each as well)

This shows the Hex stud that is hidden under the mirrors and I left the rubber cover/bumper ON it in this pic. (one each side) {also this is where the two screws go that hold on the chrome trim}

I hope this helps in some way, I would be sure to check and make certain that the hex studs are aligned so that they aren't putting undue stress on the cut-out of the windshield on either side. Also there are rubber gaskets under the four other screws that hold the windshield in place. Be sure that they are all there and not over tightened or they may cause undue stress as well.

Thanks for the pictures. Time for me to email Carl Leo and ask for part quotes since I have none of the rubber parts.

I wish the Previous Owner's would have left things alone. :tho: :bat: :tho: :bat:

Is it because I have a clearview that is taller and wider than stock?

Am I putting too much pressure on the screws and everything?

Surely, I am not the only person using a 3 x 3 clearview with a vent.

Flip, I am certain that there are many others out there with Clearview windshields. I guess I was really lucky as the P/O of my XII did nothing himself and only let his dealer perform the work. Nothing was custom or added except the drivers backrest which was a Markland at time/point of sale.
Maybe some of the Clearview guys will be able to give some advice on the bolts and hardware used.

Hi Everybody
I have the Clearview windshield on my voyager also. I have no sqeaks in mine. The srew mounts in the picture behind the mirrors that the phillips screw mounts into is wrong either in the picture or on my bike. :hmm:
The metal washer with the shoulder on it goes on top of the windshield not under it on my Voyager XII. The shoulder is there so you can tighten the bolt but not put to much pressure on the shield and crack it.
You can buy rubber washers at any hardware store that will work.
Keep the shiny side up!

Had an older Clearview with the thicker plastic. Did not have the screws that are between the middle and outer attaching points. Had the middle two, and the outer hex screws with rubber booties on them. Did not have squeaks. Now have a newer Clearview, with thinner plastic, and I added the missing hardware. I don't have the rubber washers though. Do still have the booties however, I forgot to put them on. Need to do that. I have a squeak, but it might be the fairing that is now more broken than before.

Yes, the shouldered washer under the rubber booty-ed hex screw is supposed to be on top of the shield, not under it. They should be like the middle two.
