2000mi trip over 9 days!

Post by Tonyvdb »

So originally was not planning on going due to funds but a group of friends will be embarking on a 9 day trip from Edmonton Canada down to Denver CO and then do some riding in the area and then all the way back here. Will be around 2000mi once it's all said and done.
My 96 voyager XII seems to be in great shape so this will be my first long several day of riding I've ever done.

We leave on July 17
Can't wait

You will love the way the XII eats up miles ! 3200 rpm @ 70 mph (or higher ;-) ) and the XII is just smooth and rolling along. Enjoy your trip !..................tony :-D

Make sure you have decent gear: rain suit, waterproof boots and gloves, a bike cover (security reasons, primarily), and newer tires. Our first long trip was on a 30-year-old, Honda 750, in 2009. The bike ran flawlessly, but our gear was not adequate, and we suffered hypothermia, riding in four days of rain, in the mid-50's, in Canada. We made it, but it wasn't pleasant during our Canada portion circling Lake Superior.

My wife and I try to get in one long trip each Summer, but we've been unable to do that since two Summer's ago. We live the off-season, sustaining ourselves on past tours on the bikes, as well as planning the next Summer's big trip. It's been a tough time, these past two Winters, and the next Winter is going to be even tougher since we won't get a decent long trip in this Summer.

Our first big tour was not particularly fun, in the cold and rain, but it was our first long tour (nine days), and even though we endured a lot of mistakes, and blunders, it is still our most memorable trip. Looking forward to repeating it on the Voyager in the next few years -- hopefully with better weather!

Make some memories for yourselves which will last the rest of your lives! Enjoy the trip, blunders and all. Cheers! :woohoo:

Thanks for the tips
Too bad you had such cool wet weather, it's been super hot (for up here) in the low 90s over the last few weeks and looks to be for much of the summer this year.

I have one of those new mesh jackets with the pads in the elbows, shoulders and back. I bought a nice two piece rain suit and have some decent gloves on the way. I think the only small concern is that this bike has 40,000 mi on it and I've only taken it on day trips nothing this long ever. Thankfully we are traveling in a group of 7 so if anyone runs into issues we have help. Tires have a decent amount of tread on them and no cracking so I'm not worried.

Im seriously considering getting a go pro camera but not sure about that.

Don't worry about 40,000 miles on the Voyager 1200. My last long tour pulling a time out trailer was to the AVA Rally in De Gray, Arkansas. Mileage was 156,000 miles, the engine didn't use any oil. Just enjoy the ride.

Hello everybody :woohoo:
Just got back from my trip down to Denver CO. We took the long way there and did the crows nest pass through the mountains, went up the Going to the sun road in Glacier national park (two days before it was closed due to a huge fire) through Montana. It seems they don't know how to do highway construction there, in three places they had large road sections ripped up and only had gravel with no way around it?
We also did the Pikes peak in Colorado! What a ride that is.

Put on 3700mi (6000klm) so far more than expected but the bike ran perfectly the entire time. I have about 6hrs of GoPro video I have to edit and I will put something up soon.

That's an awesome trip did you happen to pass thru Saskatoon on Friday on your way back? There was a fellow on a voyager pulled over on the side of the freeway same color as yours just leaving Saskatoon and I circled around thinking he was having trouble but when I came back they were gone.

No, we came up through the Sweet grass boader crossing near Lethbridge Alberta.
I kept looking but never saw another voyager on the trip.
