summer operating temps

Post by ScottLee »

Where would you expect your temperature gauge to peak out during these typical hot summer days when you get caught in slow moving traffic and such? What is considered acceptable besides keeping it out of the red? I hate guessing without real temp gauge. With enough airflow my gauge usually reads one notch over the thick line but in traffic it jumps up a bunch.

One way to help your radiator is to put some Hydrogen Peroxide in a spray bottle, and saturate your radiator with it. Let it soak for 5-10 minutes, then use your garden hose (NOT a pressure washer!), to flush out the bug guts. It will open up your radiator, allowing it to bleed off more engine heat, and your bike will run cooler.

Alternatively, you can flush your radiator out and install Engine Ice coolant. I believe it will allow your engine to run 10 degrees cooler, maybe more? Search the Internet for reviews and information.

To answer your question more directly, remember that the Voyager has an electric fan, controlled by a thermostat. When the coolant reaches a certain temperature, the fan will turn on, providing additional cooling. My fan runs frequently, during stop-n-go traffic, but I've never had to turn the bike off from the engine getting too hot (approaching the red zone). Cheers!

Ive had my gauge go up to half the way up in stop and go traffic in 90F weather but it normally sits at the thicker line or just one tick above when riding hard.
I flushed my cooling system last fall and that made a world of difference in where the temp sits before that it usually sat at just below the halfway point.

hey Scott, mine was to the point that setting in traffic in temps mid 80's and the fan would kick on. The needle would rise up to the red then lower as the fan ran or after I started moving again. I drained and ran a can of Prestone Flush through it, then 4 runs (fill, run hot, drain) of distilled water and then finally filled with pre-mixed fluid. That fixed my issues. Just remember there is a bleeder on the water pump to bleed out any trapped air in the system.
Very Easy job but honestly I was intimated at first.

Thanks Scott. Thats almost exactly what i did less running the flushing chemical through the system. Just a couple of distilled water flushes and a 50/50 fill. That flush stuff scares me a bit. I could always try it down the road next time

The reason I did the flush was the color of what I drained out was so dark it looked similar to a chocolate milk shake. That's also why I did an excessive amount of distilled water flushes. To make sure the flush acid was all out.
Run it for a while, I'll bet you see a big difference.
