Centerstand

Post by lmnorvell »

Just purchased this bike a month ago. Haven't a clue as to how to get it on the center stand. I've tried both the first/second stage method, while lifting, and just second stage lifting. No luck. Am I too weak for this big boy? LOL

Yup, mine is missing the first stage leaver and is almost impossible to get up on the centre stand. The only easy way is either have the bike on a slope or use a 2x4 under the rear wheel. Annoying, yes but as I don't have access to a good welder and not sure where that first stage bar should go I have not bothered.

I've just given up trying to use it. I've read all the tips, and watched the videos, but it just won't work for me. The tire and suspension pressures are correct, and the ground is paved and level. The first stage goes down fine, and the bike is sitting level on the feet of the stand. I take the stance described, and standing with all my weight (185 lbs. both feet off the ground) on the second stage, and pulling up with all my strength on the rear hand rail, I can manage about once in every four or five tries. I have tried it on a slope, but for it to work, the slope has to be so steep that getting it off the stand becomes a problem. I assume something must be wrong under there, but not being as mechanically inclined as most members, I'll just do without it. It's no real hardship to me anyway.

once the first stage is down try rolling the bike back slightly while holding the first stage down, then just step on the second stage firmly. be sure the bike is not in gear. if it still will not cooperate the stand is likely damaged.

If you have enough air in your rear shocks, then it should work like this.

Otherwise, like Carl said, you'll have to roll it back a hair to get the stand feet planted before engaging the 2nd stage.

With regards to the lever missing on the first stage, I had my mechanic weld on a rod -- I don't know how to weld, but I hope to someday learn. I couldn't use my center-stand before he welded the rod on for me. He didn't charge me much, as it took him less than five minutes to weld it in place.

I use the center-stand frequently, especially when I work on the bike: oil changes, fork oil changes, etc. For me, it would be worth the money to get it repaired, because I don't have a lift table, and my jack needs to be modified before I can use it to lift the bike without crushing the exhaust pipes! I need my center-stand. YMMV. Cheers!

As other have said "assuming' all the parts are there and not bent out of shape, getting this bike up on the stand is easier than any other I've tried, including my Ural and the Honda GL500I I just sold.

Just get the 1st stage down and flat and press the 2nd stage l firmly down.

That video was very helpful, now I understand how it is supposed to work. Now I can at lest figure out how to replace that first stage bar that is missing.
