What a day!

Post by Mr Jensee »

I was glad to get back into the saddle this morning when my friend Leo and his significant other had decided to tag a long with my wife and I on a motorcycle outing. I should have realized it wouldn't go well when I took my Voyager off the trickle charge and it wouldn't turn over. To not be undaunted I pulled out the 50 amp charger and started the bike with that.

We then loaded up, cold drinks and headed to the local Kawasaki shop to get a new tinted face shield. Once we made the purchase it was decided we would ride down to Avery Island to visit the Tobasco plant. Patty and I had not been down there since just after Katrina and then it was on the ZRX1100.

We stopped off and had a wonderful lunch in New Iberia at Duffy's Diner, a place I recommend to anyone coming through this area of the country. It is an old 50's style diner with all the trimmings and All the food they serve there is excellent. I settled on a boiled shrimp chef salad while Leo and Angie had shrimp and oyster po-boys.

We saddled up and headed to Avery Island. No problems starting or running. The Voyager ran like she always does, flawless. Once we arrived at the Island we paid the entrance toll and headed to the Tobasco plant for the guided tour.

Then everything went wrong. First we left pavement onto gravel roads. I hate gravel roads for good reason. My wife and I together on an 800 lb. motorcycle negotiate regular roads well enough but gravel, uh-uh. I of course made the wrong turn and had to turn around. I couldn't manage the turn around without going off into the grass and into a shallow grass covered ditch next to the road. I had Patty get off the bike to better drive it out and I did manage to do that but once out locked the front brake up when I hit the gravel road and down I went, momentarily pinning my left foot under the bike. The Voyager rolled over into a 45 degree angle but did not die. Leo ran over and told me to shut the bike down as we went to pick her up. That was all it took. Once shut off it wouldn't start, wouldn't even turn over. There I was 30 miles from home with a wrenched ankle and a motorcycle that refused to go any further. We located a set of jumper cables and tried to jump her off with his Concours but no go. Believe me boys and girls when I tell you that you CANNOT BUMP START A 1200 Voyager. :gmad: She would not even jump off from the battery of a passing Explorer driver.

After a while we managed to contact our daughter who graciously picked up my car in Lafayette, hitched up my sister in law's small trailer and headed out to get us. Once there we found out all the tie down straps were jammed so that took an additional 2 hours to get the bike loaded and latched down. But finally we made it home before dark, tired, dusty but happy it wasn't worse. Tonight I am nursing a swollen right ankle but I know it isn't broken. Thank the Lord.

Tomorrow, with the right tools I intend to dig in there under the faux tank and find out if I have an issue with the starter solenoid, the battery, or my alternator. But one thing I will definitely do is pay attention to the signs have a fully functional motorcycle before I do this again. It could have gone worse but what a great day! :gig:

Man....glad to see you kept your sanity and didn't break any bones in the fall. Gravel is definitely not a good mix for these bikes...especially riding two up :tho: . As for jumping the Voyager, I've only done it once and it had a brand new battery in it so she fired right up. Maybe it will just be a bad connection somewhere or a little corrosion but you're right it's never a good sign when you take it off the trickle charger and she won't start. Sounds like a pretty good plan for a beautiful day and sorry it didn't pan out.....but look on the bright side; at least you weren't at work!

Hello Mike, Your heading "What a day!" made me, at first think that you finally had a great day out on the bike.. Didn't see that comin !!!!. Sorry to hear it started out bad and just got worse......Nothing worse than a heavy bike and any distance from home..
But on the bright side , I could have started to rain !!!!
Hope you find the problem and that it just a loose connection and not a costly item needed to be purchased. Gene K.

Well according to everyone involved the day was still a success. Once my ankle gets a little better I am going to get into the bike and find out the problem. Does anybody know exactly where the starter relay is located. I can't pinpoint it on any of the diagrams in manuals. I think it is near the battery on the left of it. That is where the clicking noise was every time I hit the starter button.

I feel that the greatest part of the day was that you felt well enough to ride and took advantage of it. I hope that both you and the bike are on the mend and will soon be back on the road again.

I could not agree more about riding on gravel with the Voyager, that takes a lot of concentration and very steady steering. Good to read that at least no serious injuries incurred and hopefully the starting issue is a simple fix.

Mr Jensee,I am glad that you felt good enough to take a ride, and that you did not get hurt   I agree that a VXII and gravel are not something you want working together. :gig: The Cushman is better with gravel,if it starts to go down, you just stand up while holding on the handlebars and it comes up also. We are talking low speed here. :corn:

In my experience once a battery doesn't take a charge from the charger even when you jump start the bike it's probably going to fail.
you might want to look into getting one of the small booster packs available today they fit into the saddle bag and take up vary little room I have one with me all the time.
when you have the problem of not able to get it to turn over with a jump disconnect one of the cables of the battery, that usually means the battery shorted out and is pulling all the power from the jump.
I put one of the Throttle X battery's in and have had on issues at all and you can't beat the price with free shipping .

I totally agree with all the replies. Thanks Gene for the pm. I ordered a new Glass Matt Oddesy battery off the internet yesterday. I had plugged the bike back in when we got it home and the next morning it started with the first touch of the button. This tells me it isn't the starter solenoid but I will check everything when the battery comes in and change out the old. I will also see abut spraying all those contacts and relay terminals with contact cleaner to make sure this doesn't happen again. I did sustain some injury to my ankle and knee but nothing serious only a painful sprain. I should be back to normal by next weekend. The wife and I have a trip to Texas for a family reunion by then but are going by car. I am know that I am at least investing in a new pair of jumper cables for the saddlebags this week!

Update (if anyone cares) I just went through the bike and found nothing abnormal about the electrical system. Alternator checks out as does the starter and solenoid. Used contact cleaner to clean all plugs on the harness I could get to without removing the faring. Used dielectric grease on all. Installed new Odyssey Battery and it starts right up and idles. Hopefully when my ankle finally heals I can take it out for a test run. I don't want to be stranded like that again any time soon.

Mike, glad you got the bike running and for what it's worth there are plenty of Voyagers that care.
And many are praying for you (not the bike but Mr. Mike)!
Hope your felling better each day and more tolerant to the treatment regiments you must endure.
