I've seen the same post on FB. I've ridden for years and I've never heard of this. It makes no sense to put your helmet on the ground where it could get dirty or full of ants. What would riders who don't wear a helmet do?

It makes perfect sense as a universal signal for distress .Only problem is Nobody Knows About It .

Traditions have to start somewhere, so from now on I will stop to help if I see a helmet sitting on the ground behind the bike like this. Especially if the Harley is smoking or has a pool of oil under it! LOL!

I would be careful, there's a lot of bad people out there.
I would only stop if I was with a group, Or call someone to check it out.
Almost everybody has a cell phone in today's world.

Apparently it's an old school practice. However, if I'm in enough trouble where I need help, I won't put my lid on the ground. I'll use the flashers to warn others of my presence, and use my cell phone to get help.

One other concern about being stranded on the road is the risk of having the wrong person stopping to help you.

In an "old school" way it made sense, yet today most have cell phones. I am usually sceptical of a lot of social media post as such. Never know what one can come up with.

Don't most modern bikes come with emergency flashers? The Voyager and my previous ZRX both had them. Every time I have pulled over with a problem and put those flashers on other bikers stop to help. Very handy devices indeed.

My '03 Honda 750 Nighthawk doesn't have flashers. The few times I pulled off the road, I would leave the left turn signal flashing. May not be the best way, but better than nothing.

]Isn't the Nighthawk 750 a great bike? I sold one to a friend of mine who swears he will be buried with it. I loved that bike. I had a 2000 model. I wish Honda still made them. The bike makes more sense from a utility standpoint than anything they have come up with since.

The couple times my bike had troubles Not my 1200. you stand by the bike and thumbs up or down. to show if you need help. I lost a clutch cable on my Suzuki GS 850. No problems with the voyager.
