Oil change

Post by Jimvoyager01 »

OK ,I bought a 2001 voyager 12,,about two months ago,,today I warmed it up and changed oil,,and filter,,I pulled both drain plugs. I filled it with four guarts of amsoil, ran it for ten minutes, shut it off,,put it on the center stand,,waited about ten minutes...It shows oil in the sight glass at the lowest mark...should I add more??? I have read here that it shouldn't take four quarts,,,any advice!!!! thanks in advance :thanks: :help: Jimvoyager01

Hi Jim,
3 quarts and 22 ounces! No more no less. Do not go by sight glass. No body does. Hard bill to swallow at first, But it is true. To much oil can cause foaming. Then noisey lifter syndrome. The Voyager motors
Do not use oil, If they are in good shape. Change it then forget it until you change it again. I am sure others will tell you the same thing.
Good luck, Enjoy your Voyager. I enjoy mine ( 95).

One thing that has been lost through time about oil changes is the info about the loss of the washer with the oil filter being tossed into the garbage with the old oil filters. I bet that 80% or more of 1200 Voyagers have lost the washer that goes with the oil filter spring. It always sticks to the old filter, and is usually tossed with the dirty filter into the trash. Check yours the next time you change filters.

The washer is there to keep the spring from pushing past the grommet in the filter. (This is usually never the case.)

If your washer is missing, it is not a show-stopper, but I am usually anal about thing like this, if it's supposed to be there, I want it there. (However, my '03 still is missing it's oil filter washer for at least 20K miles.)

If you are missing the washer, any hardware or auto parts store ought to have what they call a narrow rim machine bushing to use as a replacement. Find one with the proper inside and outside diameter. They also come in various thicknesses. Ought to be a lot cheaper that a replacement for Ma Kaw.

My old 1200 Voyager has always had Amsoil in the crankcase. When I gave it to my son, engine mileage was 172,000. At oil changes I only added 3qts 22ozs of oil. On my Voyager, oil would cover the site glass just above the low engine oil level. With the Amsoil I would only change oil every 10,000 miles using a K & N oil filter.

Now the Voyager has 220,000 miles and I still change the oil at 10,000 miles. Then engine still doesn't use any oil between oil changes.

On my '94, when I found the washer missing, I went to Lowes and picked up a "Panel Washer" and reamed out the center to fit the oil filter bolt. On my '03, when I found it missing, I just put the new filter in, and pressed on. Kept telling myself I'd put a new washer in.....next time........

20 K later, I'm still saying....next time....

Nearly a quart can remain in the crankcase if the front plug isn't removed.
