I need help replacing the Driven Gear Assembly seal. The seal behind the driven gear is leaking oil into the swing arm housing and leaking out the boot from the swing arm to the transmission. The driven gear assemblyis out and on the bench. Not that hard to remove. The driven gear has to be held with tool 57001-1027 to remove the bolt holding the assemble together which I don't have and none of the three dealers here has it ether. Assuming I can get to the seal the manual says to preload the bearings on reassembly to 5 in lbs and stake the bolt. 5 in lbs is finger tight my gauges don't go that low. It also says not to use a punch to stake it. I don't have a press. Then the torque specs in the front of the manual say to torque the bolt to 87 Ft Lbs. Is it 5 in lbs or 87 ft pounds.
Ya I'm lost...

Easier to buy a replacement rear end. Carl Leo may have one, or ebay.

Dumb question but, are you sure it is in fact engine oil your leaking. A final drive gear oil leak will travel forward to the u-joint area and drip from the boot.... as many of us here have had that happen. Gene Kap.TinyTim wrote:Thanks but I was talking about the driven gear not the rear end...
Also beware of what gasket you purchase for the drive assembly to the transmission , there is a oil feed hole that must be there.

I agree to make sure it is engine oil coming through the boot instead of gear oil.About a week before the Ashville rally I found gear oil coming out of my boot, I got my closed vent hole drilled in time. Thanks everyone that has help and as many of you have pointed out... it was gear oil foaming and traveling up the drive shaft housing. As some have pointed out I'm using the wrong gear oil. Also I need to drill the vent hole. Third don't fill it to the top of the filler opening. S/B 180cc.
Ok then I'm still learning. Lots of work of for what could have been a simple fix. Yes I'm humble. OK then...

Drill as small a hole as you can. And don't fret getting anything down into the final drive. Where you drill the vent hole it is baffled and that last little swarf from the drill won't get to the gear set. At that point you may fill the final drive up to the thread hole. Once I did the vent hole ( 0.031 ) diameter , I had filled the final drive up to the thread hole with no leaks present to this day. 2000 with 81,000 miles. Gene Kap.
