Rear speakers
Does anyone have experience, (or creative ideas) relocating the rear speakers? I would like to make room on the luggage rack for a rack bag. The typical bag won't fit between the speakers in the current configuration. I'm planning an extended two-up trip and need the additional space a rack bag will provide.
Thanks,
Brian

Re: Rear speakers
Hi Brian,
Most will just remove the rear speakers completely for more bag mounting room.
Really don't hear much from the rear speakers at highway speeds anyway

Re: Rear speakers
One thing I noticed is a placard underneath the trunk package rack that warns against putting more than 2 lbs. on the rack. I gathered that the reasoning behind that might be the rack's 4 attachment points where fastened to the 1/8 inch thick trunk lid. For a 20 lb. bag that comes out to 5 lbs. static load per attachment point under the trunk rack.Silverthorne CO wrote:Does anyone have experience, (or creative ideas) relocating the rear speakers? Just curious, except for light stuff like sleeping bags, has anyone had any failures carrying a rack roll bag above the trunk?

Re: Rear speakers
I have also just removed my rear speakers to gain the extra space. While they do add to the sound experience, it's not enough that I miss them. I use the space for a tent, a couple of sleeping pads, and other gear I want quick access to, like rain gear, the outer shell of my jacket, or clothing layers I take off/put on as the day warms or cools. Never weighed the stuff but it's probably in the 10 lb range.
If I wanted the space AND the speakers I would cut 1/2" plywood to about 5" x 8" and screw it under the rack so that "wings" stick out to the side on which to re-mount the speakers. But keep in mind you have that extra width when negotiating narrow spaces!

Re: Rear speakers
Looking at the mounting system on the back package rack to the trunk, thinking out of the box, one could use 1/4" - 5/16" plywood or OSB board to make a rectangle that bolts to 3 mount points, then mount to it an aftermarket set of speakers. Priming wood then finishing in say Rust-O-Leum black enamel would seal and waterproof the wood and give it a pleasing look.
For example, overstock.com: Pyle 600 Watt Motorcycle Mount Weatherproof Speakers
I'm only using the speakers as an example of a possibility, this is not a recommendation for that particular speaker. If a set is purchased say in unfinished plastic, one could prime and paint to match the bike. Some auto paint stores will mix up a rattle can of spray color, if you can get your bike color matched up.

Re: Rear speakers
I've been looking at this as well. I'll put the question out the forum public. How many passengers actually use those elbow rests built into the rear backrest? I've sat back there and they seem to be too high for any comfort. with that in mind, my suggestion is to make a bracket to move them forward just above those somewhere, instead moving them out wider. Because the slanted design of the speaker boxes, they shouldn't need to be moved very far to make room for a nice sized bag.

Re: Rear speakers
Agreed, I've found that just running the front speakers when up to speed is much easier listening to than running all 4. I might just upgrade the 2 front speakers and leave the rear ones OEM.debron wrote:I have also just removed my rear speakers to gain the extra space.
