I think the best solution would be a modern Radio that utilizes the bikes stock control via an adapter harness.Something with bass, treble, loudness adjustment.A tone knob alone is pretty lame sounding. But as long as my current radio still functions it will be perfectly adequate for now.

The problem as I see it is that you are so limited in what will fit in that bay. then take in account that many of those units are not water proof, so now you have to mount it out of the weather and take up valuable storage space elsewhere. then there is the compatibility issue with the handle bar controls. Won't say it can't be done, but from what I've gathered here, it very limited and most likely take some cutting into your harness to make them work, but only for the volume and selection controls. Don't think I've heard anyone mention another unit that will also allow for the speed volume sensor. With all that mentioned, I ask how much better sound do you expect to get from 4" speakers? I've wondered about leaving things alone and adding one of those small self contained powered subs. Might just add the missing low end punch that is needed.

Yep. contacted him yesterday. He has some great ideas and his prices are plenty in line. Just trying to figure out which way to go and when the funds will allow it. The good part is that he will bring the radio up to the present time and allow the use of all the controls and all of today's gadgets. The bad is that I don't think it will do anything for the limited sound of the 4"speakers. I think the best sound is to use either the OEM intercom headset setup or some form of Bluetooth headset. I'm no gadget guru, this is just my opinion.

I play thru helmet headsets, when I play thru the Pioneer speakers they are limited volume wise.

did they ever make a headset that could be used without a helmet? Anyone ever try to make one using a set of hearing protection muffs or even replacing the speakers in a pair of cheap W/M stereo headphones?

I don't see why a new speaker housing couldn't be fabricated to use larger speakers in the rear. 6.5" rounds or even 6"x9". The housings for the 6"x9"s most likely drift behind the passenger backrest though.. unless you stood them up and added lighting to the back..

Going to have to think on this a bit :hmm: .. but fairly sure it could be done with fiberglass.

Two problems with that thought...
One, the amp is only 25watts per channel x2 so not enough to power larger speakers. As well as upgrading the amp is difficult because of the added load it would put on the electrical system.

Two, you won't really benafit from larger speakers in the rear as at higher speed the sound just gets thrown out behind the bike.

I installed a Legacy LEQ-4 equalizer amp in my Voyager and really love the sound quality and volume. It has a 7 band equalizer with an output of 120 watts(2 x 60). It really brings the stock system to life. This is what son calls an old school amp. It will only amplify the signal going to the speaker-most all new amps will not work on the Voyager. It fit nicely in the right front fairing pocket. Its been a few years since I put it in and im not sure if they are still available. I believe Pyramid also made similar amps. The install was fairly easy in that the Legacy has fours wires in and four wires out which exactly matches the four wires coming out of the stock amp. I used small spade connectors and did not cut or chop up any of the bike wiring. You will need to supply 12 volts to the amp.

I wonder what could be done with this. http://www.jlaudio.com/hx280-4-car-audi ... viewHeader It certainly could put out more sound. Fitting it might be the issue.
Use the stock head unit and convert the DIN plugs to something other.

I was wondering if something could be done with an EQ to help with sound control. Also thought about a larger amp but knew the power system was limited. I figured that if I were to convert the entire bike over to LED lights, that would save considerable power load. As far as larger speaker housings in the rear, I agree that most of that sound would never reach the driver at speeds, plus I'm already not fond of where they mounted the speakers and how they restrict the trunk rack. sounds like that LEQ 4 that HarryL mentioned just might be the ticket if you can find one. My reason for wanting to boost the system is only for in town lower speed cruising while listening to tunes without a helmet . On the highway, I plan on getting the intercom system so my wife and I can communicate without shouting and enjoy some quality tunes without the wind noise.

I would like to know what you do to your Voyager to make them go so fast that you are out running the sound coming out of the rear speakers. :corn:
That would put your speed up around 700+ mph :-O
So what is it Supercharger ,NOS, jet assist or is there magic involved.

LOL, true but road and wind noise over takes the sound from those rear speakers that would have been a better analogy :)

I think the voyager really needs an exhaust cutout, cable operated before the mufflers exiting at right angles to let the people worshipping their "smart" phones know that there is a precious human life along side them that would like to go home in the one piece with all their fluids and parts intact. The bike is quieter than car tire noise at 80.My other road bike is a Harley roadking with rhinehart exhaust. It is brutally loud at 80-100.Cars are well aware of my presence before and after i pass them.It is kind of obnoxious but its a much better feeling than wondering if the kid swerving beside me actually knows i am there on my whisper quiet Voyager.I got the voyager because i wanted to experience the Japanese touring bike thing, riding in relative luxury.I certainly enjoy the bike.I am just aware that its quiet operation could put me at some risk.I make sure not to dilly dally in someones blind spot and i am mentally prepared for some bonehead to pull out on me when I am already passing him.Stay safe.Winters comin.

This would be great with 3 channels. 2 larger rear speakers and 1 sub. I know nothing about the channels and I think you have to do something to turn it into a sub. A resister or something. Leave the 2 fronts with just a nicer pair of speakers. My questions are: do these hook up to speaker outputs or somewhere else. Does the fader work at the speaker or before amp. Putting large speakers on the back for town riding without helmet, and just remove them when on trips. Maybe they would hear me then. I've always rode loud bikes and hated when I rode a quiet bike.

Just got one of these adapters off Amazon, works great! iPhone 6 paired right up and it sounds good. Funny thing, my radio was working only when it wanted to, front buttons were intermittently working. Inserted this cassette then ejected it, voila, everything back to normal!

87.9, is the suggested modulator freq. I'm looking at this option, so that my phone can be in my pocket, no cords dangling.

Just be aware that if the belt breaks in the tape player the adapter will no longer function, Petes modification that removes the entire casett assembly and replaces it with a dedicated Bluetooth and USB unit is a much better option.
