Proud owner of a new to me Voyager!

Post by KISSfanJoe »

Well folks, I posted a few days ago about going to look at a bike and today I went to check it out! I actually decided to buy it! It is a 1994 Voyager with 32,000 miles on it. The bike wasn't in as good of shape as I was expecting, but it wasn't too bad. The bike needs a little tlc, but it runs and drives fine. In fact, I got it up to about 75, and it was pretty smooth. Cosmetically, the bike has scratches and a few cracks in the plastic. One in the fairing, on the back of the trunk. The fairing I plan on fixing from the inside, the trunk will eventually get replaced, but the crack isn't bad at all. The choke cable needs to be replaced, the radio unfortunately doesn't work which bums me out, but it appears that the previous owner was messing with wiring to add an amp. I will take it back to stock and hopefully it will work again. It needs little things here and there. The passenger radio controls, a battery, the start button cover that says "Start" is missing. Minor things! The tires are in good shape, the brakes are good, all the lights work, the gauges work, and it runs good though! I am not sure about the air shocks, but will add air tomorrow. However, I plan on changing to progressive springs in the forks like my dad has in his. The bike came with a 5x8 trailer with ramp, tie downs, and a cover. I was able to negotiate and get it all for $1500! :) I am one happy camper and can't wait to tear into it and fix it up! I will take better pics tomorrow after I clean it!

I know, I fully expected a few dings here and there! It really isn't bad, and I am good with compound and wax, so I am not worried! I will take some more pics after it is cleaned up, I just couldn't wait to show you guys! Yes, I think I got a steal at $1500. He had gotten it as a package deal from a family member. He wanted a 4 wheeler for his grandkids, and they told him to take the Voyager and trailer as part of that deal. The guy I got it from had absolutely no interest in the Voyager, and didn't need the trailer, so he was just trying to get rid of it. That worked to my benefit! His family member was the original owner though, and I got the owners manual and radio manual to go with it, as well as the Kawasaki tool kit! I am anxious to work on it!

Great find for 1500 ! And the trailer is a good extra bonus also. From the pics it appears to have been very well kept. My 2000 has 81,300 on it and I would be asking for 2k for it without a trailer.
Good luck on the radio and remember Pete is our radio tech, if you have any questions. As for the passenger radio control, my opinion is it is a PIA, whenever you open your trunk.
At such a great price means you can get some progressive shocks and fork springs and still be under 2 grand... Full progressive with no air is a world of difference in how it ride's.

Thank you! The trailer is definitely a bonus for me! I have several bikes and I riding lawn mower that I occasionally have to take to my grandmas, so it won't go unused!! In fact, within the next couple of weeks, I plan on painting it and maybe doing the floor. I will probably be contacting Pete about the radio if I can't figure things out... and I will be ordering my progressive stuff today! You are right, about the difference. My father's first Voyager had Progressive. He sold it, and when he got his second Voyager about 6 years later, the first thing he said was "It needs progressive." I have ridden a Voyager with and without progressive, and it is night and day difference!

Yes, it is very different than riding a Voyager haha, but it is very fun too! Between my dad and I, we have quite the bike collection. My baby is my Victory V92, my dad has a Victory Hammer, we have a Kawasaki Nomad with a full fairing and bags, my dad has a '95 Voyager, I have a 1984 Kawasaki LTD 1100, and we have 3 V65 Magnas. One V65 runs, but the other two are projects. In fact, I am using one as parts for a bike that was my uncles, it has 8,000 miles on it and is what started it all! :)

Thank you! They definitely come in handy! I am just trying to find a place to store it now! haha! It may have to go to self storage by my house! Oh well! Also, I see you have a Vulcan 800? I had a 2007 Vulcan 900 before I got my Victory and it was one of the best bikes I have owned! I loved riding it and miss it at times!! It was perfect for in town!

Great Find! :perfect10: If you do not know about the ignition switch wiring harness issues, you might want to check the posts on them. The '99 I bought 6 years ago with only 22000 miles, already had two repairs,so I rewired that.I also had to drill out the final drive vent hole, and replace the cooling system hoses, water pump seal, and O-rings at the water manifold.Other than those minor repairs, it has been very reliable as I have added 33150 miles to it. :woohoo: I am impressed with the bike every time I ride it.

AVA member Pete Franchi (suzib6sw) can help you out with repairs to the radio. I suggest using ABS glue to repair the cracks in the faring since that is the plastic the the Voyager is made of .

Ok, gotta ask.. which rear progressives did you go with?

I just picked up a used set of the 416 series, said they were off of a 87, and looked to be in good condition except for the bottom bushings looking a bit rough. Figured i could get a set of those.

For anyone else seeing this that might have these.. can you compress these by hand? Or are the to stiff? Tried to push down on them.. wouldn't move.

Most of the time, no compression tool is necessary. Replace the shocks one at a time; the new shock should be installable without a special tool, as it should be very close in length to the bolts on the bike. I did mine that way, with little difficulty. Cheers!
