Thinking of buying a 1994 Voyager XII...advice?
Okay guys, it has been a while since I've been in the Voyager game. My father's Voyager was taken apart by some jack*** mechanic and not put back together. The transmission had issues and we spoke with Carl Leo about it, but have not gotten around to sending the motor to him. I still plan on doing that, however there is a 1994 Voyager that I am interested in picking up. I figured my father and I can ride it, and we will fix his '95. Then when the '95 is up and going, we can go on a nice trip together. Yes, I know that is being greedy, but I LOVE these bikes and have always wanted my own. It has 31,000 miles and I was told it runs good, tires and everything are good, it just need a battery and registration. The bike came from Iowa, and he is the second owner. The bike comes with a decent trailer that has a ramp. He has gone down on the price and he is willing to sell me the bike for $1800, which I think is a good deal. Is there anything that I should look out for? I have bought used bikes before, but is there anything in particular that could be wrong with a '94 Voyager? I know that if taken care of, these motors are bullet proof! Also, I would want to add a backrest and some arm rests for the passenger. Is this do-able? I know I can get a Utopia backrest, but how hard is it to find a Kawasaki one?

$1800 for a running voyager is a good deal and even better if the trailer is included
The utopia backrest is a really nice one and works well. No reason to get anything other.

My thoughts exactly! The trailer is a 5x8 and has a ramp with an area for the front motorcycle wheel to go. We have several bikes and a riding lawn mower, so the trailer is a big plus for me. I figured if it runs and rides that is a good deal. Is the utopia backrest removable?Tonyvdb wrote:$1800 for a running voyager is a good deal and even better if the trailer is included

Yes it is but it will leave a hole in your seat. You have to remove the passenger seat and unbolt it from the pan. I have never looked to see if the backrest can be removed from the bracket itself.

Okay, thank you. I wouldn't take it off really, I'm just thinking about passengers getting on and stuff. Something to consider I suppose! My brother could get on just fine with it though, and he's really the only passenger. Just thinking of my girlfriend. Also, does anyone know what my options would be for passenger arm rests? My dads old bike had some that flipped out for passengers to get on.

...That is the great thing about the "utopia" backrest..... it attaches structurally to the rear passenger seat, and can be easily removed with one fastener !(the top part ...leaving only the attachment stub) You will get so spoiled ...and enjoy it so much ,that likely you won't ever consider removing it ! ...Tony

Wow! That sounds perfect for my needs! Sounds like that is the one I would get then!Lucasind wrote:...That is the great thing about the "utopia" backrest..... it attaches structurally to the rear passenger seat, and can be easily removed with one fastener !(the top part ...leaving only the attachment stub) You will get so spoiled ...and enjoy it so much ,that likely you won't ever consider removing it ! ...Tony

Plus the utopia is hinged in such a way it leans all the way forward onto the front seat so the passenger can get on and off without it being in the way.

Yes the back rest will get out of your way when you are swinging your leg over the saddle. It is very well built and will probably outlast the bike itself.

Re: Thinking of buying a 1994 Voyager XII...advice?
With regards to passenger arm rests, these are what I use: GL1100 Passenger Arm Rests. They come with an S-shaped bracket, which attaches to a bolt on the passenger grab bar. They rotate forward/back, as well as in/out, allowing the passenger to mount/dismount with the rests out of the way.
We've been using these for over five years, on our Voyager, and a '79 Honda CB750. They are really a universal accessory, so long as you have a convenient bolt to attach them to. They are high quality, brand new, after-market accessories. They work fantastic on the Voyager. I highly recommend these to any rider. Cheers!
