Temperature sending unit

I am new to AVA I own a 1993 1200 voyager very clean,my temp guage does not work.I read possible ground problems maybe an issue is this possible or is sending unit just bad?

Your bike is 22 years old so it is possible to have a temp sending unit go bad. Contact Carl Leo the guru of all Voyagers who is the go to guy for an answer as to how to diagnose it. I am sure it will involve using a multimeter. You can email him at voyagerparts@bellsouth.net . He might even have a spare replacement if it is bad.

I had the same issue, but added a ground wire from the housing to the frame. Fixed. But also had the wire a bit loose on the sender, PITA to get to

I think I remember somewhere on this forum someone took a picture of their" added ground wire" would show you what to do . maybe some one else reading this will remember that post and where it can be found/provide link. ......Tony

Temperature Gauge Fix

It has been reported that several have had problems with the Voyager XII water temperature gauge reading either low or not at all. It has been traced to an inadequate ground. The fix for this involves checking the grounding for this gauge. You can make a small ground wire to run from a thermostat housing (which contains the temperature sender) bolt up to a 6mm bolt in the frame just behind the steering head, or another good grounding point.

Just finished with sending unit.Recrimped connection tighter with dielectric grease also added the extra ground wire from housing to frame.Temperature guage works now. Thanks for the tips.

I checked out the ground wire on my '99 last year when I replaced the water manifold O-rings and coolant hoses ,and it needed cleaning and tightening.I also put dielectric grease on it.So I would check it out during your maintenance service.

Yeah mine did'nt work when I got my 1200. I found that the wire had fell off. I had to crimp it just a little and put it back together. Works fine now. ohiojack

I agree 100 % Tony, But that last 10 % is the hardest.
And that's getting paid for services or products.....

To stir up old post;
I tried this today, attaching a wire to the housing of the unit, and my gauge still doesn't work. Do I need to attach it to where the sending unit enters the housing? (I currently have it on the bolt that Kawasaki has a wire connected to the negative of the battery)

Could the sending unit go bad, it can. Ask Carl Leo, may point you in the right direction.

I don't know if Im having the same issue of not. I've noticed since I pulled the bike out this spring, that the temp needle doesn't drop all the way down when cooled off. It rests just below the normal running temp, but when fully warmed up, it only moves up to the normal temp as always. I'm guessing that it may be do to taking the needle off last year and getting hung up. No big deal as long as it is reading correctly while running. Just curious if anyone thinks this could be related to the grounding issue mentioned. I will be purchasing a new windshield as soon as I can afford one. I'll make a note to try to remember to add a ground to the sending unit as long as I have the bike broke down.

Question about this post. I have done the ground modification but still gauge is not moving. Is there any way to see if the gauge moves or is bad before having to pull the sensor

If you ground the wire that is on the sensor the gage should move .
