DARKSIDE

Post by ohiojack »

Well I've search for a tire (darkside) to fit my voyager. Walmart doesn"t have 165/80-15 available anymore, nor does belletire or discount tire. The only place was Tireman with a tire called Multimile at 89.00 a piece. The tire had a 40,000 mile treadwear warr. Anyone have any other ideas?? My rear tire has around 4,000 miles on it and its shot. I know its a 404 junk that I had to put on during my vacation last summer (2015). ohiojack :tho:

Yeah I'm still working on repairs on my 1998. The forks are at the shop getting progressive springs, seals and fork oil. I just replaced my front tire this last September. The plan is to pull my rear shocks and change the oil, grease the splines and change the rear end grease. While I'm at it I'll change out my rear tire. New plugs and a oil change and I'm ready to go!!

WELL, if everything goes as planned (which NEVER happens).. doing all fluids, plugs, wires, adding a ton of chrome that i picked up (bag rails, trunk rails), progressive fronts (new seals) and rear (may have to rebuild the ones i just picked up), at least front tire, most likely rear too (thing of going to the "Darkside" too), switching all lights over to LEDs (going to try to custom make some), have 5 meters of RGB LED strip lighting coming, (going to see me coming down the road) and have working on something for the strip lights :wnk2:, already have new LED driving lights mounted on the engine guards, oh.. and painting the whole bike. :bat:

Just about finished setting up my paint booth, but will have to wait till warmer weather as i have no heat in the shop to paint.

You having a shop do your front progressives? Did the give you a cost for that? And did you take them off yourself? Was thinking of having shop do my fronts. Figured it would be easier for them than me with really nothing to hold them.

I have never tried darkside, but I currently have 21,600 miles on my rear E-3  , which I am going to change out during winter service, so I don't have to disrupt riding next year. With that good of tire life, I am satisfied with the E-3s even though the front only made 17,000.I did not expect the rear to last like it has,but it has not worn much in the last 1600 miles. At it's rate of wear,it would probably go 1600 more. :corn:

I have never tried the dark-side either, but with my avon venom and cobra I have just over 24,000 and 0.130 left of meat on both. I do keep an eye on the tire pressure and never let it go low. I will be changing the both out this winter as I like to have as much rubber as possible between me and the road. I can't understand why some will get only 7k on a tire. The worst I ever had was 12,000 on a rear E-3 running it a bit low when I had the rear-air shocks to soften the ride. Carl Leo will recommend checking tire pressure often. For me , the cost of tires is the one thing I don't even give second thoughts about. Everything else I'm looking for a good deal on.

You are right,Gene, tire pressure is important to tire life on bikes, trucks, cars, etc.YesterdayI checked the pressures on the VXII,rear was only 38 bumped it up to 40,front was 35,went to the Cushman.Must have been awhile since I checked it ,15 both ends :bat: :bat: and I rode it Thursday. :-O took it back up to the tire limit of 30.

Just ordered the Avon Cobra for my '03 V-12, front and rear. Talked to my son and he tried to talk me into going Darkside as he did with his Triumph (I think Rocket 2.3L bike). He had to search around for someone to change it out for him. Otherwise, still E3 on front.
For me, sometimes on fresh wet the back end feels just a little loose on accelerated corners, more than i think it should. We will see after these get put on in a few weeks.
Still riding, but might be in 40's going in Monday (In Phoenix of all places). Got some snow pants at Goodwill to pull on when a little cool for just the chaps today (<$10 on special).
Used to ride in Oregon so I can definitely feel for you guys up North. Had to get out one time on the Jan 1st and got caught riding on fresh snow for about 10 miles, then freeway (clear) in the 30's for 90 miles (didn't have the gear back then). Worse, my 10 yr old son was with me, he remembers it as not fun, but a great memory. When you got to ride..... :bat:

Well,I had a shop try to mount my new milemaker tire on my rim, and it would never seat. There was a 4 to 5 inch section of the tire that would never inflate/seat no matter where the wheel was turned in relation to the tire. We had the air pressure turned up to 80 psi and tire was well lubed. I,m thinking I got a bad tire. I got fed up and ordered a elite 3. :tho:

It's normal to take between 100# and 110# to make the bead seat. I've done 5 (Federal of Nexen) so far and every one went that high.

Thanks, I'll save the tire for the future and try again sometime. The way the tire acted, I thought the sidewall was defective. It wasn't just the one side, it was both.

Put new tires on last spring ,,,The rear tire is for a 1962 Volkswagen from www.DiscountTireDirect.com ...........
here is part of the invoice::::::::
12447 1 1 165 /80 R15 87T SL BSW ,,,,,,$59.98,,,,,,, WDOH01 WDOH01
VNT VNT BRAND G-2
Comments: VEHICLE: 1962 VOLKSWAGON BEETLE

Took a little getting used to,,,but not much,,,like how the stability is evident right from the stand,,,up,,you instantly feel the bike balance itself,,,,,the ride is awesome,,,soft,,and easy...The turns was where this old school 50 yrs on 2 wheels twisten the throttle ,,,, this being first time ,,,,on the DarkSide ,,,was apprehensive of the ,,,lean ,,,but after 70 miles ,,,out in the Country ,,,was PLEASED,,,the price was like what ? and thousands of miles,,,,,no brainer for me,,,,,,,,,Once you've gone on the DarKSide,,,there's no going back ,,,,for me,,,
