Summer 2016

Post by Lance McCaw »

Has anyone rode from IL or IN and went up Lake Michigan over Mackinaw and back down through Green Bay or Oshkosh ? Just wonder about how many miles or days did it take you. The wife and I want to do this ride maybe in June or July.

In 2009, my wife and I circled Lake Superior, heading up to Duluth, then Thunder Bay, and then East around Superior, following the coastline, as much as the roads would let us. We discovered that there is a following of folks who ride/drive the "Circle Routes" around each of the Great Lakes -- they sell pins to show you made the trip. We hope to circle the other Lakes, eventually, but it will be after we retire due to the time requirements, as we live in SE Minnesota.

Our Lake Superior circle route was 1,935 miles, start to finish, and it took us a leisurely seven days. We were riding two up on a 1979 Honda CB750K: Windjammer fairing; tank bag; too small a pair of saddlebags; and a loaded hard trunk -- all with OEM suspension, and 12k miles on the bike... It was the trip of a lifetime, which we will never forget. I think about it often. We hope to retrace that trip on our Voyager in a few years: better bike, better touring equipment, vastly more experience! That Circle Trip was our first real bike tour, and we were ill equipped, and greener the the grass... But we survived, and we even thrived! Memories of that trip will put a smile on my face 'till the day I die. Hoping everyone here has such a trip, at least once in their lifetime. Cheers!

We did that trip in the early 80's on a 78 KZ650 two up. Windjammer fairing and no saddle or trunks. We had gear tied, bungied, strapped, taped all over the bike. I don't think the bike would have touched the ground if it had fallen over. We started in Rockford, Illinois (our home town) and circled up the Wisconsin side to Macanac, then came down the Michigan side and ended up in Wisconsin for summer fest. Took us 5 days but we stopped to smell the roses and see the sights along the way. One of my fondest memories on a bike.
