After reading the Dyna Beads thread I started looking online for more info. Along the way I ran across these videos of removing and installing tires using tie-wraps. I'm getting ready to replace all of the tires on both of my Voyager 1300s plus on the sidecar, so I wanted to find a way to do my own that wouldn't tear up the rim edges. I already have a nice set of three tire spoons plus several rim protectors that snap on.
Just thought I would pass these along. They are a bit long (15 minutes on one, and 10 minutes on the other), but worth it.

Re: Tire removal and install
I have a couple of wheels that show a lot of corrosion inside. When trying to clean them up they sure foamed up a lot, so I assume they had used soap to mount the tires. Most soaps have caustic chemicals in them that will corrode the aluminum wheel over time.
So, I would advise against using a soap solution as the kid in the videos says. His wheel appeared to have a nice black coating that might prevent the corrosion, but our Voyager wheels are bare aluminum inside the rim.
Others have recommended using a vegetable oil, or olive oil.

Re: Tire removal and install
We tried that 2 years ago on two different voyager tires. The results were less than good. It made installation more difficult. Might work on radials like in the tube, but NOT with our bias-plys.

I was wondering about how pliable that tire looked in the video. None of mine feel quite that soft.Neal wrote:We tried that 2 years ago on two different voyager tires. Thanks for the input Neal.

Re: Tire removal and install
I tried the zip tie method,it really didn't help all that much. The bias ply tires and the stiff sidewalls these heavy bikes require don't have much flex in them. I found it was quicker and easier doing it the old fashioned way, or taking it to a shop and have it put on tire machine

Agreed! This is more like what I am used to. I have everything he uses except that really nice teflon-shoed tire iron used at the end of remounting the tire. Great video for heavier tires!metric wrote:I have a better one...
