Re: Igniter 1179
seems to be a hot item here lately ! (the 1179 replacement to the 1248) check with Carl, (his info is on this forum) or try e-bay....but there are some questionable used ones from the e-bay source !

Re: Igniter 1179
Your trouble begins when you have the old 1179 igniter and are trying to start the engine with a dis-charged battery, if your battery is ALWAYS fully charged you MIGHT never have a issue, not worth the risk IMO. just change it to the 1248 and never have to think of it again. I was talking to Triton
(from Canada N.S) awhile back ...and he told me that the majority of Voy XII's(86's and 87's) that he goes to look at up there, still have the 1179 igniter on them ,and are still going down the road !

Re: Igniter 1179
The 1179 igniters have the start/idle timing too far advanced. When starting with a fully charged battery there is enough voltage and amperage to overcome this advanced occurrence of combustion and the engine rotates normally, but when the battery is low there isn't enough power to overcome the advanced combustion and the engine wants to kick back in the opposite direction of normal rotation. This kickback is what causes the problem with broken chains, casings etc.
Mitsubishi made both the old 1179 and the newer style, more retarded start/idle spark timing 1248 igniters.
Dave
ps; yes most of the 1987s and almost all of the 1986s I have looked at still had the 1179 igniter.
