Stock Windshield Question

I incorrectly assumed that I had a stock windshield on my Voyager.

On my shakedown ride from Knoxville to Orlando, I noticed an annoying amount of buffeting and wind noise for me. I am using about a 1 inch seat pad because at the stock seat height my knees were slightly higher than than my hips which became a bit uncomfortable after awhile. So, using the seat pad makes the angle about right and much easier to ride farther.

Since I only had a week before leaving for Vegas, I ordered a Laminar Lip for the windshield because I have one on the KLR and had good results with it removing wind buffeting. I could get the Laminar Lip in about 3-4 days to my house rather than 2 weeks.

So, it arrived today and it seems that I either have the wrong one or more likely the Slipstreamer replacement windshield is narrower at the top than a stock one.

Can someone with a stock unmodified windshield measure how wide it is at the top?

I would like to confirm I do have the correct part for a stock windshield.

My plan was to use this combination as a short term fix to make the Vegas trip less noisy and then get a Cee Baily or Clearview windshield when I return.

I measured an old windscreen with a dark tinted bottom and it was approximately 21" wide, measured parallel to and about 2" below the top, across the convex ( front ), side of the windscreen.
I believe the originals had the tinted bottom. Hope that is of some help.

I spent a little time on their website , and didn't see one of their "lips" specifically for the XII.

They do have a picture on their site, though it is a little bit buried.

The Slipstreamer is definitely narrower at the top so the lip won't fit properly :!!

I have a Cee Bailey Windshield on mine that I replaced about 2 years ago. I ordered it with a 2" higher height and the Goldwing type vent included. I have to say it has been the best move I could have made. The windshield is quality craftsmanship and I would recommend it over the original any day. Your Laminar lip is great on some motorcycles, I had one on my ZRX but a full windshield with a vent works best on the Voyager XII.

The setup you have is what I want, but was unable to get it in my short time frame. I got the lip because it was the only thing I could get in less than 5 days.

Of course, it doesn't work with the Slipsteamer so I am going to send it back. :-(

On the positive side, the adjustment Carl did on the Slipstreamer has helped reduce the buffeting and I should be good to go for Vegas. It is definitely no worse that what I would get with the KLR. And the full fairing and the weight of this machine sure do help making it pleasant riding even in high winds (very much unlike the KLR).

I also have a Cee Bailey windshield, 3 inches taller & wider than stock.
I have no wind buffeting at all. Can't feel any wind on my helmet. Great Product

I'm pretty comfortable with the stock glass on mine but my wife complains that she gets a pretty good amount of wind back by her. It must vortext right around me and hit her full on in the face as she sets taller on the rear seat. I thought maybe some baker wings ora different windshield might correct this for her. Anyone deal with this issue? What have you done to try to help the passenger out?

I also am a fan of Cee Bailey.I run a taller winshield on my harley roadking and am currently waiting for the taller and wider cee bailey windshield to arrive.I did not choose the vent option.They are definitely high quality.The difference over stock is like night and day on the harley.I expect the same on the voyager

I too will jump on the Cee Bailey band wagon....been on the XII for a few years now and it was definitely a good move ! I also went "taller and wider" and vent, and have no regrets . Also much better protection if ya get caught out in the rain ...............................Tony :-D

are you guys all looking over the top of the windshield? I've never had a bike with this tall of glass. I can't look over the top. I'm looking through it about 4 inches below the top of the glass. This is fine for the most part except when getting caught in a driving rain or at night when leaving work and the glass is fogged over. Even driving into the sun is harsh. What is the consensus, over of through the glass. should I cut mine down? If I do, will that send more wind into my wifes face?

You will get used to looking through the glass, the benefits that the passenger gets are worth some adjustment on your part.
I have not really noticed any sun issues, but have got in the habit of placing an old tshirt over the windshield when I park the bike at work. I also leave fairly late at night. I have not had any issues with windshield fogging back up once I get rolling.

I too am a "thru the windshield looker"..... I even took my old XII windshield,modified it, and added it to my XIII,over the blacked out stocker that the P.O took a saw to ,and cut it down.

Yes. I've done the shirt on the windshield trick. It works great and yes, once the fog has dissipated it normally doesn't come back. I e also found that if I point the two top vents up and in as far as they'll go. They act like defrosters. For the most part I'm used to looking through it just know that over the top is clearer but I do like being able to ride with my visor up and not have buffeting. I am concidering Baker Wings for the Mrs. Are the worth their cost for the passenger?

I've found they're about the only ones to consider. They work great.

Since I have the windshield vent I have found that in the summer using the rest of the vents in conjunction I have no need for Baker Airwings. I had considered them before the new windshield but now I think they were just an unnecessary expense. If you do go to Cee Bailey's you might want to look into the headlight protector as well. Well worth the small price.

I'm talking about using the wings to decrease the amount of air flow to the passenger, basicly creating a larger void, not increasing the flow to her or myself. She has only been on the bike a few times and this is the only things she has complained about. I'm trying to get her on the bike more, so I'm trying to do something for her comfort. Yes I know it's a bike and the whole reason for riding is to feel the wind and free space around you. She complains, even tieing her hair back in a helmet, it still whips her face to much.
What about those little wings that run the edge of the fairing? My 90 came with those and I know they made a small difference but I removed them because they were hard on my shins getting to the highway pegs and I decided I liked the look of the bike without them better. Not sure if they can be used with the Baker wings either.
I know there is a bit of play in the position of the windshield. How much can I tilt it back towards me and still be safe and durable? I'm thinking more streamline will send a smoother airflow up and over instead of the quick back draft that comes with a flat suface going through the air.

Either a wider windshield, or those add-on plexiglass pieces that attach to the windshield, can make a big difference for her. Without effecting you.
