Re: Some pics
I'm still working on the some of the body parts. I need a repaint on the right saddlebag cover. Now I know to lock the latches (argh!). The black paint has red flake in it, but it doesn't show up in the pics.

Re: Some pics
I like it! When I picked up mine, I got on to the highway and shortly I heard a goofy noise, looked back and saw my right side cover sliding across the road Luckily I got the car behind me to notice it so it didn't get ran over. I won't make that mistake again!Tim in NC wrote:I'm still working on the some of the body parts. I need a repaint on the right saddlebag cover. Now I know to lock the latches (argh!). Question, are the front flood boards a factory change at some year, or did you add those?

The floor boards were and option. Some folks love'um---some hate'um. I have a set and with a smaller set on the engine guard it gives me infinite positions for my feet........Gator Mike

Re: Some pics
If the bike doesn't have tethers on the bag lids I strongly suggest you install them. They are easy to make and will save you a ton of grief seeing your lids bounce down the highway. IF you can still get them they are extremely expensive to replace.

Re: Some pics
The floorboards were on the bike when I bought it. If I corner too hard, they can scrape. I keep 35 psi in the rear shocks to give the bike as much clearance as possible. It lets me corner, but makes for a fairly stiff ride.

Re: Some pics
Tell me more about the tethers for the lids.
Do you use a bungee, or some kind of elastic cord?

Re: Some pics
Tim, I just noticed those running boards! Those are Kawasaki passenger units fit to the front! Did they offer them as an option, or are they custom mounts? Both of my Voyager 1300's came with Markland floorboards (huge!), but they are quite different than Kawasaki's. Me Again has the ones off my '85 on his bike (I think?) since I am not a fan of running boards for the driver. The ones I took off of my '84 1300 will be custom fit to my engine guards as "highway-pegs". But, after seeing yours, I may just get another set of passenger boards to use for that! I like those!

Re: Some pics
I'm also interested to hear about using tethers! Does the XII have a problem with their latches popping open? I've never had them pop open on my 1300's, even unlocked.Tim in NC wrote:Tell me more about the tethers for the lids.

Re: Some pics
Tim, maybe mount some small model airplane wheels under each running board so they will simply fold up a bit and not grind off the bottoms! JK, of course! But, I have seen several Markland boards with steel scrub plates added underneath to protect the chrome part.

Tim, do some digging on past threads on the topic of saddle bag lid tethers on this forum, as it has been discussed in depth. You will find at least one thread with photos ,and various ways of accomplishing the same thing. also I think Kevin (chevyman) has premade sets already made up for sale .
Here is one of the threads I was mentioning, about tethers.

Re: Some pics
I should mention that my floorboards require me to use a heel shifter. Not enough room between to the toe shifter and the board to comfortably shift.

Re: Some pics
I believe they all do! That's my main complaint about them. I just can't get used to using the heel shift. Also, I hate having to lift my toe to use the brake pedal.Tim in NC wrote:I should mention that my floorboards require me to use a heel shifter. Re: Some pics
I have a heel rest on the right side, makes it easier to step on the brake pedal. I thought that was standard eqpt, but I see from the parts catalog that it's not.

Re: Some pics
I used black 550 cord for my tethers. Looks good and won't damage the lids or saddlebags. Attached with electrical connectors to the latch bolt on the saddlebag and drilled out rivet and used small machine screw and nut to attach to the lid.

Re: Some pics
Very simple to make tethers for you lids. The lids cost over $400 if you can still get them from suppliers. I used some heavy gauge weed whacker line. On the ends I put #15 ring terminals (an electrical part) crimped them on tightly with a wire crimper and made them just under 12" long. I tethered both front and rear to the existing little acorn nuts on the inside of the latches. Make them just long enough so you can pull the lid and hang it on the side of the saddlebags. The rubber gasket in the lid will act as a protection for the paint when open. Takes maybe and hour to do this and will save you a mountain of grief later.
