Dallas, Texas shop/mechanic

Post by Waterwalker »

OK so it will be riding weather here in a couple of months. Does any one know of a reputable shop who would be able to do some work on my '88 Voyager? I am getting no where fast with all the projects-winter is also boat rebuild season. Since no one else (family) is excited about this riding venture it gets put on the back burner a lot.

This bike was sitting in an airport hanger for a couple of years with 48,000 miles, so I still need to finish...fluids changed (except fuel and tank), swap carbs (already talked to Leo), and check to see what I missed. I did check with 2 Kawa shops, but not impressed.. Maybe someone will have a different reference for a mechanic. Thanks for you help...one day I will ride!!

Realistically you will probably not find a regular motorcycle dealership that will work on an 88 Voyager. Most of the bonafide Kawasaki dealerships don't even know what Voyager XII is anyway.

Yes you are correct as far as a dealership. They really don't want much older than 10 years. Maybe someone will be grazing these pages and know a shop who enjoys older 'classics.' Might just need to get all the ducks in a row and a 3 day "no sleeper." Dang-I'm not young like that anymore.

Unless you have major issues a lot of the Voyager maintenance you can do yourself. If you stay ahead of issues like brakes, fluids, battery etc. The bike will run maintenance free in the long haul. I found years ago that YouTube has a lot of info on bike maintenance that can get you out of a jam.

Here is why I was looking for a shop...OK so it will be riding weather here in a couple of months. I am getting no where fast with all the projects-winter is also boat rebuild season. Since no one else (family) is excited about this riding venture it gets put on the back burner a lot. Mechanical I can do- Make more time in a 24 hr day I can no do. Just hoping it would be easier to find an "old school" mc mechanic than one to do boat stuff. No major issues, change fluids, maybe do progressives, change out or rebuild carbs, check cables, road worthiness etc. From prior post-this bike has been sitting for 2 years in an airport hanger. Started on it then had to switch gears.

Yes sir-They gave me 2 names. Never know what to expect...walked into a shop and he had thousands of $$ merchandise (loads of leather), just laying around, not much organization, and an old catalog system for finding parts...hmm this just might be the guy.

If you are still looking for a shop, you may wish to consider A&R Motorsports in Haltom City. I recently had them do a boat load of maintenance and upgrade work on my 02 Voyager XII (which I think is virtually a carbon copy of your 1988 model). I have logged 300 miles since picking up my bike and I am pleased with their work. They typically focus their business on sport bikes, but agreed to tackle my Voyager. I told them I knew of a fellow club member looking for a shop, and they were OK with me forwarding their name to you. Reasonable rates and good folks to work with. I chose them after finding consistently good customer reviews online, and finding an orderly and professional looking work area when I visited their shop in person.

Shortly after making his initial post starting this thread...I think that was "water walkers" bike up for sale on our "classified ads" section of this forum months ago. probably sold it,a beautiful bike for a VERY low price,I think I recall him saying that he only gave $500. for it,and HE advertised here as "make offer" ! I don't see it listed there anymore,so it likely moved on to a new home, but may resurface on this forum again ! Thanks for making a post about you finding a good shop,as others may benefit from it !

I know this won't help WaterWalker in Texas, but here in west Michigan "Village Motorsports" dealership had no issues with working on my (new to me) 2002 Voyager over the winter. They went thru the carbs, replaced fuel pump, due to bike being left set with old fuel in it. Then it only ran on 2 cylinders at idle and above that when cold, wound up being bad coil and wires. The point is they were willing to not only work on it, but would also take the time to trouble shoot it. Been riding bike this spring and is running very good, 49.5 mpg on todays ride(all 2 lanes). Just thought I would pass this on for anyone in my area

Yes you are correct on most points... I still have the Voyager, sold the ski boat, gave the jet boat to my son, and now will look at getting back to the bike. Sometimes we just get to many irons in the fire. I did find and 'ole school' mechanic who will do the stuff I don't get to. Just wished I could get my other half to enjoy the open ride atmosphere. Bless her heart-she gets on the bike...only as it sits in the garage. AT THIS TIME she wants no part of the open road. Maybe that will change as I plan on a ride for her "around the block" to get her used to the other cagers next to her. So maybe I will be riding in a few weeks. A sad LOL- almost a full year after I got the bike. But still well worth he acquisition fee.

Will also look into the Haltom City shop. It is across town but always make a dy of some fun out of it if needed. Thanks.
