Charging system 99-1200 Voyager
Im thinking of buying a 99 1200 Voyager with 25k miles.I haven't been able to see it yet. but I have plans to see it this weekend. The bike is supposed to be in good condition. Today the owner said he started it for a ride and the battery light or charging light came on. Ive had two of these bikes and I have never had this problem so Im not familiar with the light. So he told me he would have to take it in for repair. I told him I would like to check it out and buy it as is, for a discounted price. As I think I can figure it out. Im open to some feedback on this. He was asking $3500 or best offer before he had this problem.

The battery light is nothing more than an electrolyte level sensor in the battery. Comes on when the water level is low. Put a voltmeter on it when running to verify any issue with the charging system. But you'll need to put some distilled water in the battery, or replace it with a new one. Most have gone to gel or AGM style that has no provision for the sensor. Clip the sensor off, and attach it to the orange wire on the turn signal relay, if I recall correctly. That'll keep the light turned off and not back-feed the system with the ignition, unlike if you hooked it directly to the positive side of the battery.
