De-darksiding, What's a good rear tire?

Post by 6ft1_grand »

I tried it, I don't like it, it's dangerous, the car tire is going in the trash!!!

Do you have a preferred tire for the backside of your Voyager?

Do a search for Nexen car tire. Many here have used it.

I like the E-3s,My front lasted 17,000 miles, and I replaced my rear at 22,000 during winter service, with, maybe ,2,000 left.I decided not to try to change it during the trip to Hurley. :gig: I did not feel the rest of the riders wanted that long of a pit stop. :rolling:

Curious to know, what made you feel it (dark side) was dangerous?

I love my dark side rear tire. If I did not run the dark side tire. I would try a Mitchlen Commander 2. Got one on the front and it performs well. Would not hesitate to run one on the back. :~~

I couldn't get the shimmy to go away. I tried everything in every possible combination. Steering stem adjustment, tire pressures, air shock pressures. I seemed to dial some of it out but it would never go away.

After one such adjustment, I went out on the freeway and thought things felt better. So I decided to test the limits of the new adjustments. 75, seemed ok, 80, 85, 90. When I reached 95, the bike went into a violent shimmy and I thought I was gonna lose it. After immediate consideration on how I was going to square up with Jesus in the next 3 seconds (just prior to our meeting) , I poured on the binders to bring it back to a controllable speed and Jesus granted me a temporary reprieve.

I know, I know, I shouldn't be riding my bike 95mph. But that's not the point, it should be able to ride like a tank at 95 if it ever is there. Since it has displayed this example of fine behavior in the past, I feel it is a reasonable expectation to want to see it in the future.

In conclusion, I did a lot of reading up on opinions before going darkside. At this point, there is not an opinion on the planet that can grant that car tire a Get Out of Jail Free Card. I won't even sell it to someone, I don't want to be responsible.

Me too, before I got dead!

In my defense... I did this knowing it was an experiment. I did read a lot of information from people that are already doing it and saw very few negative reviews. I knew that I could not totally rely on other people's opinions, I wanted to develop my own. Once experienced with an open and unbiased mind, I did develop that opinion.

My opinion - If you decide to do it, that's on you. I won't be going back to the darkside.

After 4 years on E3's I went Avon Cobras front and rear.
Personally, after a couple K on this (almost all around town so far) personally I like them. I feel they are more grippy in mildly wet weather. Haven't been into anything downpour yet, and the jury is still out on longevity. I will be putting over 4k on them in 3 weeks next month so we will see. After that, riding from NM to the Carolinas and then on to New England and back.
Sorry, really wanted to go to Hurley, but scheduling (and wife's scheduling) made it impossible. Hope you all enjoy it.
Blessings,
Ken

I ride on Pirelli MT66 Route tires, front and back. I got around 12k on the rear, and 15k+ so far, on the front. While the mileage is far less than an E3, the Pirelli's are pretty much glued to the road in the rain. I will pay extra for wet traction. Your situation may be different. Cheers!
