Buying a used voyager, what should i be aware of???

Post by Kansa737 »

Hi everyone. I'm looking at a couple of voyager xiis and i'm wondering if there is a list of what to look out for?
It's come down to one of those or maybe a goldwing 1200 (or a 1500 if i can find someone who doesn't want Harley prices for one)
one of the guys at work has a '96 voyager and just from driving it around, i think it would be a better option for me. I've always felt a little cramped on the 'wings.
thanks in advance

The 96 is the same year as mine and was the 10th annaversary edition. So it will have the CB installed. They are great bikes and really a hidden gem in the touring world. They are the most comfortable ride on the highway.

How does it start and does it run well? Maintenance on these is also a breez.

By the way, welcome aboard the forum.

I really disagree with that statement - Many new touring bikes ride & handle WAY better than our 1200's.
We have 30 year old designed bikes.

The ignition switch harness has often been fastened too tight to the steering head, resulting in broken wiring, and lost connection. That had already happened to mine when I bought it with 22000 miles. There are several posts dealing with that issue.

how well do these bikes fit a larger rider? I'm 6'4 with a 34" inseam.
Although compared to my current bike, almost anything would be and improvement.
I'm currently riding a suzuki GS450.....my daughter asked me if i were gonna join a circus and ride that thing with the rest of the clowns

I recently bought a '94 and the week after getting it rode it on a 6700 mile round trip from Florida to Las Vegas. I am 6 foot with a 32 inseam and felt a bit cramped. To help, I put highway pegs on so I can stretch my legs when riding and that helped quite a bit.

The adjustable handlebars are nice and can easily be moved around to fit you.

I only wish the seat were slightly higher or the pegs slightly lower for me.

But, with the highway pegs and a partially working air hawk I made the ride without too much discomfort. I typically rode 450-600 miles per day and one day at 925 miles.

Good luck on your purchase.

The Voyager will fit you far better than that GS450 does. Sit on one and try it out before you pluck down any money. German bikes like the K1600GT are built for large frame riders. Germans are larger size population than the Japanese. I do know the Honda 1500 Goldwing fits guys with large frames.

I'm 6'4 and 34inseam and after adding the highway foot boards and modifying the rear seat so it goes back another notch it fits great. I spent 6 straight days on the road last summer putting on over 3700mi and the only issue I had was the muscle burn on my upper back between the shoulders and that has only to do with the positioning of the handlebars.
All in all a great bike for a tall person.
