I spent most of this past weekend giving a LOT of joy rides in my sidecar rig. Lots of family and friends from all over the U.S. are here in town for our church's world conference, and I am doing lots of duty as taxi and chaufeur to and from several events. There are a lot of bikes out on the road, too, and invariably they see a sidecar rig and give the low-hand salute as we pass by going the other way.
Several of my riders have asked me why I don't return the gesture, and one fellow even turned around and followed me to ask the same. WTF? So, I figured to explain this to all of my fellow Voyagers here, too!
Just be aware that a sidecar rig's steering is different and it takes total control 100% of the time, with BOTH hands on the bars! It makes any instrument adjustments or radio tuning a split-second thing. Very few bikes can be tuned to ride with just one hand SAFELY for very long with a sidecar at highway speeds. So, when a sidecarist doesn't return your salute, don't shoot! He's just being a good pilot! Besides, we do nod instead of salute.
No disrespect intended!

Re: No disrespect intended!
Thanks for the explanation.
There are many times when I also nod back to other motorcyclists. And it always when I can't take my hands off the handle bars for even a moment, like heavy traffic.
Bruce, turn that sidecar rig north to Hurley. Sure would like to meet you in-person.

I had planned on it as far back as eight months ago, but my doctor has me on a short leash for a while. Tony knows why. I even had reservations for five days at the Day's Inn where everybody stays, but cancelled that just a month ago after double checking with my doc. She doesn't even like it when I take a quick ride to Topeka and back (120 miles round trip!).HMB Don wrote:Bruce, turn that sidecar rig north to Hurley. Sure would like to meet you in-person.

"Is there a doctor in the house?".

BTW, if anybody is cruising through the Kansas City area and needs a stop for the night, we have lots of space for camping, and can help out in case of breakdown. Tools, transportation (bike and people), welding.

The whole "biker solidarity wave" has certainly changed over the last 40 + years ! back in the day, it was the raised fist, then went to something else , then to something else....... I just give the 2 finger PEACE sign off the end of my left handlebar (except in hard corners) without ever taking my hands off the bars.
that's all ya get !
